'My' posters - please critique!

Black and white/samurai wolverine look really cheesy, but the rest look pretty good. It would help quite a bit if you posted the images you used to make those, so we can comment on the work you actually did.

Well, does it look cheesy or does it look cheesy because you don't know the full history of Wolverine? I can't post all images because every poster has about 5-7 different elements that I used, but thanks for the compliment!

Well most of what comes out of the Hollywood is pure 100% cheese. It's prob been at least 10 to 15 years (or longer) since they (the studios) have made something original. Excellent work Paulus keep it up. Hey filmman on your next project hire Paulus to do your poster and DVD cover art.
Indie Films are the lifes blood of this industry right now.

I remember reading that first short series. Was it 4 comics? Can't remember it was so long ago.

Nice work!

Logan's never looked better. I'm digging the Shogun look.

It was this series... he heads off to Japan looking for Mariko.

Haha, Wolverine was definitely my favourite character. Great work, especially since you focused on Wolverine. I know who I'm coming to for poster work, if I can't pull off a great one!

Wow

These are solid ! I'd bet some people on this board would love to have you create some brand identity for their films !

My only qualm is the BATMAN sheet; the font is too far right and should be brought away from the edge more; let the words breathe a bit.

Okay, so, I too am a graphics designer, so I'm going to give you serious and particular critiques. Firstly though, you do excellent work. Keep that in mind. Okay, here it goes:
- I think the X-Men 3 DVD, both front and back cover designs are excellent. The lighting has a good consistency to it, and everything balances out very well.
- The X3 poster at the top featuring Magneto as the visual lead only has one thing that bugs me, the character on the farthest left, the blond kid, stands out a bit TOO much from the background, he actually stands out more than the character who should be visually leading over him, the black girl in the leather jacket. Also he is the balance to Mystique, who is VERY dimly lit and a dark character already.
- I like the B&W Spiderman poster, very clean lines, and the softness works well for it.
- The Spiderman DVD back cover's great, but the front cover has a problem. He's not responding enough to the glaringly bright light source behind him, it has NO effect on his lighting. And the main light source on him from the front is a little too bright and even and sort of works against the very dramatic sunset in the background.
- The samurai wolverine doesn't quite work, but I honestly can't say exactly why, the head just doesn't seem to go with the body.
- The Dark Knight poster looks great.
- The Wolverine Origins poster with Sabertooth in the background looks great. Good compositing of elements, everything works together fantastically. Now I will say the contrast of all the shadows may be a bit TOO high for any commercial use, but I love the style and look of it.
-The last Wolverine Origins poster works REALLY well. The dark contrast HELPS this one a lot because it's such a character focus, a solo moment, you don't WANT to see anything else. I also like the glow you added to his eyes, very nice. Although I get the suspicious feeling that the shot of his face is from a film where he WASN'T playing wolverine (seems a bit too clean), but nevertheless it works. Good job.

Anyway though, as I originally stated you do excellent work, so please don't take these critiques the wrong way. Keep it up. You should be getting work doing this (if you don't already).

I agree with the person who said that the particular Wolverine poster looked sort of "cheesy". I say that while knowing nothing of the full history of Wolverine, and that in itself is probably a pretty good argument for saying the poster is not very effective. The poster is supposed to be selling me on something that I don't know about yet. The image of Wolverine's head amongst all of the other elements just looks incongruous, and makes it seem somewhat silly.

On the other hand, the rest of the posters look very good!

WOW! Thanks alot for the comments guys, at first when I saw this thread had 2 pages I thought 'oh man, they're bitching about the use of copyrighted photos.' But thank god it isn't so!

Thank you for such an elaborate post. I used a pic of Jackman from the Prestige poster for the last Wolverine poster. I added a slight stubble but I guess it's too slight. And you're right about the contrast on the Wolverine/Sabretooth poster, I just like a dark, mysterious, cold look for Wolverine.

You're right about the words on the Batman poster. Should've seen that. Thanks!

Cheers!

Any of you are welcome when in need of a poster! Filmman, if you need anything, just PM me. I'd like to work with any one of you.

I like the look of it. My only thought would be to make it less graphic-y, more tangible. Like something that looks as though it's "really there" a little more. That is of course imagining it would be used at the opening of a film for your production company logo. I played with it a little, hope you don't mind. Just adding some texture, more light, and a little air to the image. Any thoughts?

I like it. Although it's a little dark but that's because you don't have the original file. I like the beveled look you gave the backshield. Could you tell me how you did it?

I wanted to do it in 3D but I'm not skilled enough yet.
