Looking for help on buying wireless XLR setup with Phantom Power.

Hey guys,

I am looking for a wireless setup to replace an XLR cable that goes from my Sony Z1U to mic w/ boom pole. I am steadicam operator and cannot have wires attached at all. This transmitter needs phantom power. It be perfect if it had a headphone jack. The boom operator needs to be able to monitor the sound and transmit to the Z1U. I am looking to spend as little as possible without losing too much. What specific equipment should I be looking at? What else should I be looking for in a wireless setup? What’s a good place to buy this equipment? EBay?

Hey guys,

The sound and transmit to the Z1U. I am looking to spend as little as possible without losing too much.quote]

let start from this line - as it have allot of controversy

to loose allitle as possible cost more then your camera

http://zaxcom.com/transmitters.htm#
trx-990 + receiver
the recorder with tc is build in already - about 5 grand ( yep 5000usd)

now let see what you can get for as less as possible to match your camera as it not cine alata :-)

preamp fro sd ( sound devices with headphones amp) mp-1 or from psc - about 350 ud and if you have over 1.5 grand
bd-1 from sonosax which can sit over the boom

now you need tx and rx which could take line level input

the cheapest acceptable for me is used audio 2000 non diversity - you can find for 600-800

then all the other lectrosonics as 195 , 210 audio 2000 diversity ,audio 2020 ,lectro 200/201 and the newer 211,401,411 and um 400 tx

of course you will get allot of responses you can go with sennheiser g-2 **** as well - and why not as you looking to spend as little as possible :-)

where 2 look
at my signature :-)
ask on ramps( soundmen news groop on google)

then in Gotham sound ( used equip)
coffey sound ( used equip )

then at trew audio or location sound or pss ( these people take 15% on used so the prices the highest for everything but you can make bazaar with them and it may work )
the last is the eBay as you dont know if it would come working at all :-)

Ok wow. I had no idea they were that expensive. I am looking for something under 1k. The sennheiser g-2 500 look like its what I want but even new its more than I should spend right now. Anywhere I can get this thing used? I know it sh** but its better than placing the mic on the camera next to the loud 35mm adapter....

its under 1 k
and you dont need g-2 500
if you like your boom operator would hear something :_)
yep life is expencive

Hey Oleg, don't entirely eliminate ebay as an option. I've gotten some great deals off of ebay. But, and I agree with you on this, you takes your chances. Anything I buy used (even from Trew and Coffey, etc.) always goes to the manufacturer for a check before I put it into production use.

VileKyle, a part of the reason Oleg is recommending the higher end, expensive wireless sets is that the lower end systems are subject to drop outs and interference more often than the more expensive sets. You have to remember, the boom should be your primary audio, and if you get a drop out, you have no audio and you're in the studio looping in post.

Look into renting, or better, hire a sound guy that has the right equipment and can certainly provide you with many other benefits.

Oops...one other thing...

You didn't mention what type of mic you have on the end of your boom...if it's a crappy low end shotgun (i.e. azden scm, Senn. ME66, etc.) then don't sweat it - buy the Sennheiser or some even cheaper brand. You won't hear the difference.

Phil has a GREAT point. Hire a professional soundmixer they have all the gear and experience. It will cost you but like Hunter S. Thompson said about this business "...is a shallow money trench..." and to steal more quotes (Phil himself) "Crappy sound makes for a crappy movie, no matter how pretty the pictures."
Best of luck
Allen

sound wise nothing
the better option is to buy sd preamp as mp-1 give your booman ability to hear wht he does
if you scip on that the 500 tx with 100 rx is what you need
