If we're talking just hardware I'd just love to see a $1000 homemade PC touch what one could configure a new Mac Pro with $6k with. Seriously, that claim seems just a tad bloated. You could put in the high end video card, the raid controller card and a bunch of RAM and HD's (third party of course, but everyone knows you pay too much for Apple RAM and HD's.) Or you could go with the 8800 and a decklink or Matrox video converter and god knows. 6k is a lot to play with.

Yes, I agree a 6:1 dollar value ratio is a bit much, but it does seem that you pay more for Mac hardware, even when the hardware is exactly the same, especially on high-end stuff.

How many manufacturers make PCs? How many make Macs? It's simple economics. Apple realized this, and it's a big part of the switch to X86 architecture.

I am running WinXP and Mac osX on my mac pro. Both run well.

TBH which is faster wasnt a huge thought I had on my mind when I plonked down my $ for my latest mac pro. My reasons were to firstly stick with FCS and secondly I cant be bothered playing with anti virus, anti spyware/malaware rubbish on a machine I need to work on. As far as I am concerned all that junk clogs up your machine. If I HAD to work on a windows based machine it wouldnt have an permanent net connection.

My WINXP is on a different drive so if it dies it does and I can reinstall with no harm done. Interestingly though on my WIN installation I have no anti virus etc either. I keep the firewall running and the only websites I visit are this and msn (australian for news). I dont run email on it.

I hate them both equally.

If I had my way I would run avid on my 8 bit Nintendo.....

The only question you need to ask is what do you want to see when your computer freezes...An hourglass or a beachball.

Well as of right now Im looking for a video card upgrade option for my mac pro, and simply cant find one. Thats annoying me a lot. Anyone got any ideas? Id like to look at something a little closer to the cards in the newly released systems.

I'm a Mac guy but I have to say, with this current QT 7.4 breaking everything in sight because of stupid DRM through iTunes, I have to agree with my client, whom I HIGHLY recommended buying a new MBP and FCP. He said today after three hours on the phone with Apple Care, "this is worse than Windows ME and Bill Gates screwed us over many times but this is worse"

I agree. This is totally unacceptable. Shot an interview for him last week, gave him the P2 media and his system is locked out, will not load any P2 clips into FCP, QT Pro is playing all longer clips as corrupted because the DRM kicks in on clips longer than 10 minutes, his system prefs are corrupt and locked out. He now has to do an entire system OS reinstall, reinstall FCP and everything else, just to get it back to down to QT 7.2 so he can actually use his new system.

Very un-Apple and very disappointing.

DRM is an issue on the PC side, too. My brother was running Vista business and it took me three hours to get it to play a DVD with sound. XP isn't too tough, but I can't justify Vista on my machines because DRM is such a pain.

Congress should have made it illegal, just like pirating. Make both punishable by death. That's probably a better deterrent anyway.

My original point is not to buy Apple RAM, but third party RAM.

That goes for how much Dell charges as well.

Base model with minimal RAM.

Again, if you are spending $6K by buying a Mac from Apple with its drives and extra RAM, then you being a little bit ignorant.

I said something like this sometime ago

Some of the reason why companies will make alot of money is because of end user ignorance (No-offense to anyone).

But then there are customers who buy out of convenience who will support them with pride being the motivator.
