Any iTouch owners out there?

Anyone noticed under the hoobla of the Macbook Air that the iPhone and iTouch got new apps/upgrades today? Sounds pretty cool, OK I'm interested. I go to download them for my iPod Touch and find out I have to pay Apple $20 for them.

Now understand that I have no problem with paying for a service or product where it is warranted, but only iPod Touch owners have to pay for this nifty little upgrade. IPhone owners can get it for free.

Last time I checked, I payed $400 for my iPod and you can pick up an iPhone for the exact same price. Am I a second class citizen here? Am I just crazy and does it not matter? Look, it's $20 and I can pay that, whatever. My beef is with the apparent favoritism going on here. Sorry, but I just don't want to lug around a brick (comparatively) for a phone in my pocket all day.

This just rubbed me the wrong way...

Actually, you're paying for an upgrade that the iPhone always had. You're not paying for the same upgrade that was released today for the iPhone.

After rereading some literature, yes that is what is happening. The packages are still IMO directly comparable. In addition, all iTouchs shipping now have it included.

Yeah, I always found this kind of nickel and diming of their customers by Apple rather strange. I mean, you don't exactly build customer loyalty this way. How weird. But this kind of petty diming is standard MO for Apple - what's up with that QuickTime Pro nonsense? I mean that functionality should be included free - you'd think that when they're battling MSFT for a media player, a battle where they are outgunned, Apple would do everything to win users to their player... instead, they mug them for petty cash. And this goes on and on in all kinds of ways with Apple - it's a Jobs thing, I think. Thank god for competition - if you hate the MSFT monopoly, you'd positively go insane under an Apple monopoly. I like to keep 'em both on their toes. Bastids.

I don't think customer loyalty is something they really have to worry about any time soon. Those cultists would shell out $1800 for a piece of lint out Steve's pocket if he told them to.

Think of this way, William. iPhone owners are alreay kicking over at least $60 a month for the iPhone in addition to the upfront $400. And the only real thing they can do that you can't is make phone calls.

Old thread revival. I picked up an iTouch last week, happily all the above issues have past. Pretty neat little gadget. Video looks nice. I put a few HPX clips on it that looked beautiful of course. Great for a quick on the fly show. The wireless connection also means I can grab clips I have on a server without physically connecting to anything.

Noel how are you doing this?

So far as I know (and I haven't visited apple.com recently) you cannot d/l files to the iTouch nor play embedded QT/Flash/WMV.

Yeah, they nickel and dimed you but are you suprised? When they revealed it, it was missing those apps even though it was the same machine as the iphone. They generally milk a little extra out of the early adopters because they know they'll pay
