I just got a Panasonic DVX100B.

The tape that I'm looking at buying is the Panasonic AYDVM63PQ 63/42 Minute Professional Quality Mini-DV Digital Tape. Priced at $34.90 for ten tapes. Does this sound like a good buy for the quality? Am I safe using any mini dv tape?

Thanks,
Mike

Could you teel me where is a good place to buy these? I'm in the USA, TN. I can shop online but they're all coming up for overseas purchase......

Thanks,
Mike

All I could find was th PQ and not the SQ.

ebay results (searched for DVM63PQ):

specific ebay result (50 tapes for $144 equals $2.89/each):

froogle results:

B&H Photo ($3.65/each):

When searching for it, i'd suggest dropping the AY- part because i got like no results with it. Enjoy!

Hey guys, i just bought some panasonic tapes but I don't see the letters pq anywhere. The serial reads AY-DVM60EJ-P, any opinions on this model of tape?

These are the standard quality DV tapes from Panasonic. I use this brand in my Panasonic GS320, a 3CCD handheld camcorder. They seem to tape fine, but I just always use the Pro version in my DVX100 as it has been suggested in the forum.

Honestly I don't even know the difference. I've heard it is in realition to tape strength or thickness or something. Though some swear by the Mater Quality tapes I have heard some suggest that the MAster quality is a little too rugged for day to day useage because it is super-heavy and may cause damage to the mechanics of your camera because of the thicker/heavier tape. Those folks seemed to think that Master Quality (MQ) tapes were for dubbing back out to MiniDV completed projects for storage of Masters, though that seems odd to me to "back up" to a magnetic source.

Anyway, for my investment I use the ones you are talking about (serial AY-DVM60EJ5P for me) in my $500 cam and the PQ in my $2000 cam. I figure for a couple buck (actually cents) more it is worth it to me, just in peace of mind.

I've used a few AMQs. If I started using PQs instead, would I have to run a head cleaner? Or would it be a smooth transition and I'd have nothing to worry about?

I would not use the head cleaner unless I had a problem with dirty heads. Though some suggest it when switching brands of tapes. I do not think this applies to switching between types of tapes within the same brand.
They suggest the cleaner bewteen brands simply as a precaution against dry vs. wet lubrication between certain brands. All Panny tapes use the same lubricant. No cleaning necessary.
