How to avoid a bad situation (fraud)

I've come to find myself using the Postal Service, you can send the item c.o.d. to whereever the potential buyer lives and the both of you can agree on the price for the the item and they have to pay the post office before the item is released to them and both can be assured there not being scammed. No harm no foul, but hey its only my 2 cents added.
thanks

Paypal is a damn joke. I am an online merchant and will never take paypal again! I have been burnt by them when buying things as well as my brother was burnt by them selling.

If you want the story just let me know and I will detail it out but basicly paypal dont give a $hit as long as they get their money!!

I disagree. I'm also an online merchant and paypal is great. Lower fees than most other CC processors. By the way, all CC processors are interested only in their money.

Warranties...I see lots of folks selling stuff with "unsigned" warranty papers. That gets you nothing. The warranty is guaranteed through the original sales receipt. The warranty registration papers just get you on mailing lists.

Just wanted to add a few things for canucks,
A money order from the United States will take 21 days to clear into your account, despite what people say that is what my bank told me. I was going to sell my DVX to some guy named ROD in florida so he sent me a money order and when my bank told me about the wait I told ROD he would have to wait. He didn't like that and kept assuring me the thing was good. Well I called the bank that was issuing the order and for some reason they could not verify 100% the girl asked me if I knew ROD personally, was he a friend I said no. So she said that if anything went wrong with this money order I would have almost no recourse other than go on a trip to florida. Needless to say the deal fell through and I sold my DVX locally. Long story short, when dealing with our neighbors to the south be very careful as to what you accept as payment and if it takes 3 weeks to clear be firm on that

all points being valid arguments, My d@mn eBay rating got burned because some fool "claimed" to have called but did not leave a message. I will never send any money out without a contact. (ie: leave a message, email, anything) pro activity is the key, if you want to sell goods, you should at lest leave a message.l

When using PayPal, always fund any purchase via CC. That way you have some substantial protection against fraud, since you can get the charge reversed. If you fund directly from your bank account you are at PayPal's mercy to reverse the payment, and PayPal's "buyer protection" is pretty weak (at best - basically it's a joke).

can you setup like an auction on ebay like closed just so the person can "bid" on it and win?

Benji,

Yes, you can - just simply create an auction heading and text that is sufficiently gibberish that no one searching for your product can find it. For example, if you're selling a DVX, make your heading: ASDFAFDEEIDJJFIOESOFJEDOOEA
And don't include any additional text in the body. Then give your buyer the auction number and they can buy it using Buy It Now.

Phil

actually on ebay you don't even have to do that, you can set it up so that a bidder must contact you to be aproved, then you put them on an aprove list, or you can put a single person on the list at the start of the auction, I've bought several items on ebay on auctions only I'm allowed to bid or buy it now on.

Yes. It has not happened to me, but I've read this scenario: a fraudulent buyer pays Paypal using a credit card, then receives the item, and then does a "charge back" on his cc, claiming he never rec'd it (or that it was broken or faulty).

Can you guys recommend some escrow companies?
I've got a deal in the works and would like to handle it that way.
Paypal is just a lot of headaches and $$.
Thanks,
Vali

Hi all,

Having seen several posters complain about items missing from the shipping box, non-functioning items upon receipt, and the like, it occured to me that when it doubt (dealing with an unknown dvxuser) we should consider taking a few precautions. Here's my thoughts on how we could create documentary evidence associated with suspicious sales of costly items:

Seller:
Videotape the item/s before boxing it. If possible, include a demonstration of it's working condition and include video footage of the current date. Take additional live video of the items as you are boxing it.

Buyer:
Take live videotape footage of the shipping label of the parcel upon receipt, then rotate the shipping box 360 degrees to document the condition of the box upon receipt. Of course, if the box is damaged, do not open it - create a claim with the shipping carrier. With the camera still running, zoom back, open the box and zoom in while removing the item/s from the box. Physically inspect the item for obvious damages. If possible, turn on the item to demonstrate its operation upon receipt.

Yeah, I know this is less than ideal and I certainly wouldn't do it for medium or low-cost items, nor would I do so for most dvxusers since we're almost all good folks. However, for pricey items with uncertain dudes, it's something to consider (although personally, I usually would pass selling/buying from dubious sellers/buyers).

Happy hunting,

Michael

I'm an individual trying to sell my EX1 on here (not ebay, i despise it) but I still don't see the clear plan on how to deal with the money situation. Some folks like paypal some hate it, no one has recommended a reliable escrow that I can see. And as an individual, I obviously don't have any "sell remarks" or "ratings".

What to do? How do I make sure both me and the buyer are comfortable with the transaction?

I would highly recommend everyone use www.escrow.com for all major purchases

I have used them for several major purchases online and they hold your money in escrow until you verify that you have received the item and are satisfied with it.

They only charge the seller.

I am not associated with them in any way. Just a satisfied customer. It may save
a lot of people from getting screwed.

I thought I was getting a good deal on a DVX100B, just last month. Turns out I still hadn't done enough homework, but pay pal came to my rescue, I got my money back. I guess its paypals money... I discovered this site after I "purchased" my DVX. I thought I knew enough but as it turns out you can never know enough. Once you have done your homework, start studying!
I am very pleased with paypal!
Do not buy from Sunshine Electronics!!!!

I just wrote this up on the pana3ccd forums so ill post it here too.
Many of you may already know what the bait n' switch scam is. But for those of you who dont know, here's some signs to look out for:
- If they email you saying that you need to call them up to confirm the order
- If the prices are ridiculously low (ive seen DVXs for $999, SCAM)
- If they have ridiculously overpriced accessories (i've seen camera chargers go for $500
- If they are in brooklyn, NY (this is not a joke)
- If the reviews for customer satisfaction on one site are all very short, saying things like "very good customer service", or "fast shipping, highly reccomended"
Here's their workflow in scamming you
1. You place the order and your credit card is immediately charged.
2. They email you saying that you need to call them to confirm the order.
3. You call them in.
4. While on the phone, they're "representative" will try to force you into buying overpriced accessories. I've heard of them saying some crazy things like
"the camera only comes with a one time use battery, you need to purchase a rechargable battery from us"
"the camera doesn't come with a battery charger"
"if you do not order these accessories, we will not be able to process your order"
5. Now whatever one of those you get, you will probably say no to, but if you're stupid enough to actually pay an extra $500 for a charger...
6. They will charge you an obsured amount of money for shipping that takes a month. This is because they do not regularly stock their items and they will order the item, which may take like three weeks, then they will ship it to you which will take another week.
So please, just check www.resellerratings.com before you go ahead and order an HVX200 because its only $3000.
Thanks for reading!
well im new to pricing and how much things cost and all that but used dvx's can go down to 1000 dollars
right?

I too have been burned with Paypal back in the days when I was an ebay Powerseller. They just don't give a damn about anyone as long as they get paid.

Haven't used then in years and never will again. Some people will only buy stuff if you use them though. But I'd rather wait a little then get burned again.
