Moving to L.A. - Housing Questions

The Cahuenga Thai isnt there anymore. There's one a half mile from my house, but the last time I ate there, I got food poisoning. To be fair, I dont know it was them, it could have been my lunch, but after a good case of food poisoning, one is not quick to go back to the food. I had a hotdog for lunch - haven't had one since either.

Now I only have Thai BBQ if I happen to be in Glendale at mealtime.

I ex loved DRY chicken. She hated Thai BBQ. She would have loved Zankou.

When the lady at Ralph's carded me, she said, "Oh wow, it's your birthday... happy birthday!" Appently, people don't check the birthday announcements on dvxuser. No one wished me a happy birthday. Oh well... (that's not true - John G. wished me a happy birthday)

It's your birthday? How ironic! Happy Birthday! 35? Are you lying? You look alot older in your avatar. Or is that Orlando Bloom?

35? How'd you get that number? I'm 23. You must be thinking of someone else? My avatar is of Orlando Bloom. I have everyone fooled...

For great Thai, there's a place on Fair Oaks, just a few blocks south of Colorado in Pasadena. It's one of the best. It's Called Saladang. Hot waitresses too.

That's too bad. This has been a little over 2 years since my food poisoning and I've only been back one, that was about 3 months ago. It was fine, but I still have that 2 days of deathly pain talking me out of going. I used to go a couple days/wk.

Have you been to City Wok? Great food. And the best fish in LA, Sushi Ike at Hollywood and Gower.

That's not specifically where. It was just S of Lankershim on Cahuenga. West side. There are plenty other locations. I dont know if they are at Magnolia.

Yeah. Hide was good. R23, good but expensive. When I first started eating Sushi, a friend and I went to about 30+ different Sushi places around LA. My friend kept a record of our thoughts on it (OCD). I took note of the places I liked and those are my two places.

Ike is the best, freshest fish. He's in the fish market every morning. Most places buy and freeze. The other place is called Chiba in North Hollywood. It's at the corner of Lankershim and Saticoy. It's in a sh*tty little strip mall, but the fish is top notch. Shig Chiba, the current owner/head chef took over for his dad who passed away a couple years ago. His dad opened the restaurant about 30 years ago when the Valley was all the same and now, 30 years later, it's a not so nice area. The fish is great, though, and it is not expensive.

And I avoid "half-price" and "all you can eat" sushi like it's the plague.

I just found this. It sums up my thoughts on Hide's fish. Good, but not great. (The rest of the post is a bit crazy.)

The thing about a lot of neighborhoods in LA is that it can make a difference of literally one block, or even half a block between totally safe and totally unsafe. That's why it's best to go with someone from LA to check out prospective places. I've lived here for 25 years and I've got something of a sixth sense - I may not even know the area, but just walking around I get a sense of how safe/unsafe it is... sounds like ESP or something, but I swear it's true :)... I think most folks who live here develop that ability.

The other thing is that, yes, traffic is a ***** in LA. BUT and that's a big BUT, most folks in LA, even long time residents are pretty clueless about the most efficient ways of driving from point A to point B. One hint: you are not legally obligated to always use freeways... there are such things as surface streets... and back alleys... and crossing parking lots and gas stations etc., etc., etc. There are tricks. You'll get the hang of it if you pay attention :), then you can laugh at all the rubes stuck in traffic as you zoom around them.

Finally, prepare for cost-of-living-shock. Stuff just costs a ton here, especially rent, gas and car costs in general... you'll use your car a lot here.

This is not to discourage you. Personally I love LA - not fashionable to say so (it's much cooler to say you hate LA), but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the U.S. (though I love visiting NYC and San Francisco).
