What a great thread! Inspiring stuff, thanks a lot. Can't wait to see a trailer or something when it comes out. Congrats on the picture lock.

Wrap Party and ADR...

Thanks for checking in gents! :cheesy:

WRAP PARTY

We had our Cast/Crew wrap party on August 25th. About three months after we wrapped production, but at a time when Dorota and I knew we'd have the edit done so we could share some new info with everyone and (hopefully) get them psyched to do ADR.

100+ people showed up from the film. Our production lighting and sound masters, Mike and Kirk, took the charge on the party and did a great job. Here are some pics below...

As you can imagine it was really cool, and a bit overwhelming, to see everyone again. Luckily our hosts had a mic hooked up so I could give everyone the major updates all at once and answer questions.

Good times were had by all and for a special treat we showed nearly 20 minutes of outtakes (on the big white screen you can see part of above) I had roughly thrown together just days before the party. It was everyone's first look at some raw footage too, so that was pretty cool.

ADR

As of this writing we've finished ADR for 3 people in the movie (Jennifer Hooper is in the pic below from this past Saturday. She plays "Kristen", the lead character's younger daughter).

There's one scene in particular between her and her dad, at about the mid-point, that came out really great and strong. This scene, however, takes place outdoors and at a cliff along Lake Erie, so this scene proved to be our first serious challenge for ADR. Mainly because we don't want to lose an ounce of what we caught at the original shoot.

You might remember I said that we got some studio space to do ADR in (b/c unfortunately we have zero space at our apartment). The space however is unfinshed, so it's essentially a closed-off room. So using some mic stands we have created our own little blanket tent to do the recordings inside. Very ghetto, I know, but it seems to do the trick.

Below you can see basically the tools of our new (and very mobile) sound setup. I'm still learning and hoping that it all comes out good in the end. Andy (who's doing the score for us) is going to help out here as well once we get everything recorded and are ready to add effects/reverb and then start doing foley.

OH! I forgot to add one other piece of BIG news!

I immediately gave a copy of the final edit to the VP of Nursing at Brevillier Village (the nursing home we shot at) and, she not only loved the movie, she gave us her blessing as well on the cut as far as the facility is concerned!

This is a big one because there are many residents, families, and staff that have been involved throughout, so while we were editing for the cut we wanted, it was always in the back of my mind that there may be some scenes that someone might not approve of or decide they don't want their family member to be a part of the movie anymore after seeing it...even though it's not a documentary.

Anyhow, thought I'd share.

Just wanted to say a big congrats, i cant wait to get to watch the film.

Your a big inspiration to me, I plan to shoot my first feature soon and i will be on a tight budget aswell and you are living proof it can be done... keep up the good work and i look forward to seeing the finished product (or even a trailer).

Thanks Topher! Can't wait to show you the film! Yeah man, just get out there and do it. Really that's the best advice anyone can give right? Just dive in there... Just plan and plan as much as possible...

Congrats on the progress John. Glad to see they are happy with it so far.

Yes....so far! Ha ha ha!

September and October updates

September and October updates

Sorry for not posting in so long. I missed this place!

Tonight I needed a little break, so it's catch-up time here...

Sound
Since my last posts, I've been doing ADR and sound effects recording on "schism". 3 to 5 days a week. Pretty crazy, but everything is much improved because of the extra efforts.

Sound is a BIG deal. It's obvious for those of you who've always done post-production soundwork, but for me, it's kinda embarrassing now because I feel like I need to go back and redo all the sound on my shorts because they're so bad! Lesson learned.

Editing
Even though I reached what I called "picture lock" a couple months ago, because I haven't stopped working on the movie since then, I've tweaked the edit more and more each dvd export. "Schism" is sitting at 1 hour 49+ minutes (109) tonight with credits. The extra time with it has made more things apparent that needed to go. Tiny things here and there. There will be a few deleted/extended scenes now on the future dvd.

The End is (very) near!
We now have some deadlines in early December for the (real) final cut because of some festivals we've submitted to for consideration. So by the end of this month we plan to be done: editing, music, sound, visual effects, etc. The pressure is on! But we're confident we'll be there in time. We've submitted to 6 festivals at this point. We'll start hearing back in December, of course I'll post if/when we make something...

Trailer/Footage
Obviously I'd love to show you guys footage but there's no trailer yet. I'm not even sure if I can post one online until it makes its first film festival. I will check on that, I just don't want to hurt our chances of being selected for that "World Premiere" wherever it happens to take place. But definitely once we get the movie done late-November/early-December that's what I'm going to be working on next. Teasers, trailers, re-vamped website, online campaigns, etc. I just seriously can't dedicate the time to a trailer now, well, I guess technically I could be working on one now but I'd rather type something on DVXUser. :cheesy:

more soon. enjoy the nighttime still image!

***i'll update the budget numbers too on page 8 soon with festival submission costs***

Hi DVXUsers!

OK, so we're still fine tuning the audio on "schism" and submitting it to top festivals around the world. The dialogue is all done, and synched with the vid, now I'm filling in all the background sounds. The score is pretty much there as well. It's looking and sounding better every day! I'm pretty excited to show it...

So...when can you see some of it? Right?! The website will be re-launching in early-2008 at with all kinds of goodies! We're hoping to have some behind the scenes footage cut here soon before the trailer (which honestly I haven't started working on yet because I want to get the movie itself done first) but early January the focus is going to shift back to promo. So get ready. LOTS of posts coming soon!

I might also do a daily blog/video thing on our experiences out at Sundance (we're attending, not screening - we didn't get the movie done in time, oh well, but we're going to be promoing the hell out of it while we're there). If you think this might be something you'd be interested in reading/watching, let me know your thoughts, requests, etc.

John! Hey, just got the update on your thread in my email! Great to hear more news! I am certainly looking forward to seeing more about the film soon! :) Quit teasing us ;) hehe! Best of luck!

I know man, sorry about all the teasing.

I started writing "schism" in February of 2006. It's crazy just thinking back and imagining that was almost 2 years ago (probably will keep tweaking colors and stuff till Feb anyhow!)

It's obviously been my biggest, most challenging project to date. But yeah, with all that time into it I really wanna make sure everything is as good as it gets, especially before I show anything to you guys! Ha ha!

I have an idea of how I want to do the trailer, or I may just post a scene or two on here if I won't have the trailer done in reasonable time. We'll see. From now till this weekend I plan to get a lot wrapped up.

we're at sundance now rubbing some elbows and getting clips dvds into hands of industry peeps that we meet!

we're running a daily blog at http://schismmovie.blogspot.com if you guys are interested!

and yes we have readied some clips. so ill post them up here shortly after we return as well for you guys to comment on... :-)

if you guys were out here at sundance i could get a dvd into your hands. actually im supposed to meet up with mojotrancer (Aaron) at some point. maybe he can post his thoughts on the clips after he sees them. once i get back home ill put up a clip at least and start cutting the trailer.

just a side not, in case you guys havent been reading our promo blog, i met quentin tarantino yesterday and he took a copy. also chatted it up with maria bello, rufus sewell and others. definitely getting stuff accomplished out here and having a blast doing it!
