AVC-Intra what what. But, doesn't look like it's a good companion for the HVX200 unfortunately. Am I wrong?

Maybe only in that it costs twice as much as an HVX200 :) But, it supports all the same formats as the HVX and then some.

Later,

It's not an editor -- but you can create playlists.

It's like a production van in a suitcase. It's a very, very cool piece of equipment if you do the type of work which makes use of what it can do.

The predecessor version of this unit is an editor, so by extension I'm sure this is too. You can do basic cuts-only editing and compile the output onto a P2 card.

SO you can use it to for example assemble a full news package out in the field, and output back to P2 for ingest as a package, or playout from another P2 "deck" or through the unit's own video outputs.

Nope. Native 1080p isn't possible in the DVCPRO-HD codecs. This unit uses AVC-Intra to record native 1080p.
And AVC-Intra requires it's own hardware encoder chip, so you can't add it to the HVX200

Yeah, I said that -- you can make subclips from MXFs and then arrange them into a playlist, so you can do a very, very crude edit, but it itself isn't an editor. (You can actually do the same thing in the HPX2000, only not with the nice controls.)

You can't output a rendered edit (unless that's changed since NAB; the software was still in a state of flux, but I don't think there was any intent for that).

I was under the impression that you could render out "edits" as new compound clips. I could be mistaken though.

- Mikko ... is downloading the manual now.

Yup, page 95 of the AJ-HMP100 manual covers how to export an edit "playlist" as a new clip onto a card.
It has some minor limitations though, for example the rendered clip can't span cards.

- Mikko

Not if you are used to pro- decks or editors. And that's the target audience for this unit.

I meant it's overly big. And there's nothing around it, what I meant is it's wasting space. Looks like they could have fit more buttons on it.

AVC-Intra is the future...The new HVX really needs it- even if it means a $2 000 extra...

If they did that by jacking the price up 2 grand it'd cease to be an hvx, at that point they might as well intro it as a whole new camera line.

Give me a proper jog shuttle over more buttons any day. Saying "you don't need a jog/shuttle" is like saying a taxi driver doesn't need a steering wheel, as a couple of arrow keys would do.

- Mikko ... like many professionals, can edit & control decks much faster with a jog/shuttle than with some stinkin' buttons.

I agree. Besides, the HVX, though a great camera, is getting a little long in the tooth, so simply adding AVC-Intra wouldn't justify a $2,000 price increase. I suspect that Panasonic will do both -- upgrade the HVX and introduce a new line (many of our suggested improvements would alter the HVX form factor anyway). But I'm fairly sure the 200"a" will not have AVC-Intra.
