HVX partially used to film Cloverfield

Hey all, just saw this on the interwebs and I thought all y'alls would get a kick out of it. I just read an article on laist.com and it's an interview with Matt Reeves the director for the upcoming Cloverfield film (produced by J.J. Abrams) and there a bunch of production still of Reeves on set and what else is in his hand, but a trusty HVX. In the article he mentions that they use a variety of different cameras so, it wasn't exclusive, but it's nice to see some p2 footage on the big screen.

Here's a link to the interview.

According to imdb the main cam is a Panavision Genesis. I'd be curious to see if/where the HVX footage was used in the film.

There is a similar thread in the main HVX forum.

A huge chunk of Cloverfield was shot using the HVX. That I know for a fact.

As for everything else I would guess the Genesis shot FX plates. I could confirm all this, but I don't want to ruin the movie for myself by reading the ICG article. They are always full of spoilers.

OK so I caved and read the article.

The main camera used was the F23 (an awesome camera.) And a small bit of Viper tossed in to match the trailer (which was shot on Viper) and the HVX for everything else.

I just saw Cloverfield, It was awesome. But the handy cam/shaky cam look is through the whole movie is kinda of annoying if you ask me.

You can tell on a lot of the shots when the hvx is used,(and I got to say, it looks nice on the big screen) and over all, the footage is very well blended together from all the cams, and feels seamless.

On a side note, Its funny how the supposed camera filming everything, has a battery that last over 7 hours of continuous usage, and can fit 2 hours of hd footage on a 1 tape,

It must be the mythical GREEN camera!!

Oh wait, the green one hates tape. Me too.

I just saw the film today. The shots from the party I think were HVX and looked quite acceptable on the big screen. A large portion of the rest of the footage was shot in low light and was quite grainy. Not sure what camera was used for these shots. I am sure this was intentional to give the perspective that it was shot with a very small consumer camcorder.

They definitely overdid the camera shake, particularly when there was no reason for it like standing still interviewing someone.

Odd that he says it was "used to shoot many of the scenes in the film" even though he also says it has recorded so little it hasn't even registered on the hour meter. They must be short scenes. ;)

that AD is a bunch of BS, I tried contacting the guy selling it and I asked him if he had proof that the camera was used on the movie and he never responded, and this was 3 days ago

It says this was the backup camera to the main hvx. Hence the low hours. I'm sure the main camera has lots of hours on it.

I would believe that the dailight shots were HVX, as well as the party ones. The rest, like the open air natural light stuff, would be f23- As much as I like the HVX, Its dinamic range and low light performance wouldn't be able to give such a clean night picture- or those incredible wide shots.

Anyway, it worked. And If people think the image was poor, they most certainly aren't seeing the complexity of the setup, the resolution as well as the color definition of those shots.

Anyone going to Sundance this year? Please report on the best looking HVX short you see there! I'm sure many HVX productions will be on the big screen there...

I love this - an eBay auction for "the HVX200 that was used in Cloverfield" that basically...wasn't...

In other Hollywood news: I had lunch yesterday with Ridley Scott's son's rugby coach's car mechanic's accountant!
