There Is No Softening When Moving the EX1

I feel that I have completely debunked the assertion that the EX1 softens when panning/tilting, through my own testing.

I did this using standard res charts, and at high and slow shutter speeds. At low shutter speeds I watched the horizontal lines when panning and the vertical lines when tilting. The lines perpendicular to the motion are blurred (motion blur) but the lines parallel remain equally sharp when panning or tilting.

At high shutter speeds, the charts (vertical and horizontal lines) are identical when moving or stationary. The moire softens slightly due to slight motion blur, but the resolution clearly does not drop.

If anyone cares enough, I can post the associated grabs.

Cheers Matthew...grabs would be good. And it's nice to see objective analysis over subjective comments.

Everyone who has hopes for purchasing this cam should thankyou. I thankyou.

Ever since Barry's post there has been a daily sighting of resolution loss, funny that there was none before he posted.

To prevent this issue from getting more virulent, since the mere suggestion of resolution loss while panning has made some into hysterics, posting the grabs would do a great deal of good to quell and debunk.

Post clips not grabs/stills.

Well, clips will only be useful if they are full res - otherwise we have another "yeah, but the compression..." discussion going on.
I think it's probably much more feasible to post full res uncompressed framegrabs, both from a static shot, a few during the pan, and coming to rest.

Just my .02

I would be happy to post either - but the size limits here are so restrictive.

I can't even post a full quality jpg of one frame, unfortunately. But I'll post the best quality jpgs I can - I'll have time to extract them in a few hours.

i'm back and forth on this friggin camera ... after reading the specs, i was all about it, and when i saw bloom's footage, i was 99% on it ... and then Green comes outta left field KILLING the thing, and now i'm back at "meh, MAYBE i'll think about it" ...

anyone have the EX1 and maybe a LE (in los angeles) i could play around with ? i gotta stop reading the reviews and just play with the friggin thing already. harumph.

If you need a place to host your footage/grabs, or whatever pm me, and I'll be glad to give you an ftp link to upload to my server.

Later,
Jason

I am in the same boat as you. Too much info and a bit lost now. I will rent the EX1 to test if it is available in my area. I will hold my money till Apr and hopefully Pana will announce something at NAB.

Grabs

Here are the frame grabs. Forgive me that I had to compress them to jpg quality 8 to fit them here. When I have more time I'll take Jason up on his hosting offer for the full clips.

1. static chart.

2. pan on that chart at 1/2000 shutter - shows no softening

3. pan at 1/60. Shows motion blur on the vertical features but no res loss, judging from the horizontals

4. tilt at 1/60. Shows motion blur on the horizontal features but no res loss, judging from the verticals.

Thanks, Matthew, for going through all this effort.

It helps eliminate a lot of conjecture and confusion.

Thanks for the upload Mathew.
DEbunks all those who were harping on about something that never existed. Well I certainly had not seen anything on my camera.

Those grabs show significant CA.

There doesnt seem to be any resolution loss. How fast was your pan, just trying to gauge what I would usually see in motion blur.

Yep, i think its really going to take folk actually testing it to be totally sure, for me it just looks a bit funny on the faster pan's ive seen or off the sticks, whether that translates to resolution or not is less the key imo. To others mathew this test im sure will be quite important.

Just to add thoughts. I now have two of these cameras. Had three HVX's over the last 1.5 years. Just sold the third. I still love the HVX cameras. And honestly I hope DVXUSER remains friendly to users of other cameras. I have thought about it and the reason I like DVXUSER is that no matter what camera we are using today, most of us started out getting inspired by owning the DVX. And it was the DVX that was the first camera which inspired us to be serious about making digital films, not just video. Now today several years later, the technology has matured, and there is a plethora of choices when it comes to 24p cameras. I have chosen that the EX1 will best suit our needs from a business standpoint and a film-making standpoint. I hope this website remains about filmmaking and not just technical issues. I of course appreciate the technical discussions, but sometimes there is fanboyism. I do not have a problem with people pointing out issues with cameras. It is good to know when planning for shooting. I am glad I know the weaknesses on the EX1. But...

I think Barry was off on this. I too have tested this on both cameras. I have not done anything scientific so I can not speak too loudly. But in testing I have not seen noticeable res loss yet in pans. I think what maybe was seen is when the peaking feature is turned on, when you pan looking at the viewfinder, the peaking disappears and then reappears when you stop the pan. I think this is just the slow peaking response from motion blurs causing the peaking to disappear and reappear. When looking at it in post I do not see it. I hope to test more closely, but at this point I am not sold this is a problem. I do see some skewing on fast pans, but honestly if I had not been looking for is, I am not sure I would have noticed it. The jury is still out on that one. I think the rolling shutter issue is something to watch if I am in those circumstances, but I am rarely in those circumstances.

Thanks for taking the time to do those tests, and post the grabs Matthew.

I have to say - I'm not seeing a drop in resolution in those shamples.
Though it would still be great to see uncompressed grabs.

But regardless, these are great samples to show what is really going on - not just with the res, but with the rolling shutter.
You can really see the lean in the res charts on those pans.
