To be fair, there are two other acceptable openings.

1) A closeup of water running or dripping from a faucet.


2) A "slam" opening of someone screaming while pointing a gun at someone taped or tied to a chair. Possibly a family member.
 
Answering machine message playback setting up your opening action, works too. Although maybe that comes under the heading of 'ringing phone.'
 
#20 - Your character mus exhale a large cloud of smoke directly at the camera, and sit there pensively staring for at least five minutes, which will add to the profundity of the shot, even though we have no idea wtf he is thinking.
 
I have a short in prep that starts just like that: the guy [who's not actually the protagonist] is smoking you-know-what, and there's definitely something on his mind...
Nothing can make me change that opening :bath:.

Well, don't repeat the mistake I made years back, shooting multiple takes of a drinking scene with actual bourbon...

Hahaha. I won't.

I know that this smoke-in-camera shot is a cliche, but I'll try to make it a bit different and symbolic for the story.

About bourbon, I had something similar in mind, to "help" the actor in another situation, later in the same short - where his character tries to drown his fear and doubt with more vodka.

I have never tried this and I'm wondering if supporting the actor with a certain amount of real vodka would actually help him or distract him. I don't mean that he'll drink real booze in every take, but maybe - some sips before that :)?

I'm inclined to think that it'll distract him, he should be able to act it, without support.

:). Now I remember. I actually had such an experience, but it wasn't something that I had planned.

We were shooting for one of those film-challenges and we had to re-shoot just one scene. The actor had performed well on the first day but for the re-shoot he appeared totally supported and that wasn't part of my "direction".

His girl had left him or another one had rejected him, I can't remember. But he simply wasn't there :). He had just two simple shots to do in this scene, but it took like 1 hour for each one of them :). He kept doing everything else except what was needed.

Disaster... I was lucky to get one decent take, cause we had no more time left.

So, definitely:

Booze is bad! :violin:

I'll just say

21) You must do a trailer for your short film (especially if under 5 minutes), if it is not a trailer style short film already. In the trailer you must have a 13 year old boy with the highest voice possible to do a low movie guy voice. If, however, you use text, be sure to add an exclamation point on at least one title, preferably the last title, to give it more punch.

Haha, Max...great story with the Bourbon. I can see that being a little bit of a problem.
