In depth HOW-TO 35mm adapter

i wont' argue and say it doesn't look good. but there's no bokeh. nice clean circles of bokeh. there are threads and threads of people using canon screens and opting not to because the bokeh just isn't what people had hoped for when it came to compete against the almighty nikon d screen red dot. or grinding their own and the best of the best for static is/was wax.

I assume you had to flip the image horizontally and vertically in post? Did the image being upside down from the adapter make framing an issue when shooting?

Not so much with still shots. As I kid I would draw and write upside down and backwards just for fun, lol. But moving shots, MOST definitely.

Why this one instead of the previous one you built? (3")

And if you don't mind me saying, your one good looking dude.

First, the previous one had a lot of technical problems. There were some permanent marks & flecks on the screen, the distance between the screen and the lens wasn't quite right (when I set the lens to infinity it went out of focus, and I couldn't focus closely on things), and the biggest problem was all the edges were warped out of focus with a fair amount of vignetting. It was a learning experience.

Second, thanks. I don't mind. I'm an actor. It helps me sleep at night. Bad childhood memories, fading... fading... fading...
(by the way, I'm the 1st guy in the clip, the shot with the 85mm, not the 2nd guy at the end, in case you meant to compliment him)

I understand, I haven't been able to test my spinning 35mm adapter with my DVX yet... I think it isn't going to stand up to what I was expecting. I am planning on using a collaboration between your method and the stickied thread "Yes, I am afraid I have another 45mm adapter." That is if my solution doesn't turn out well.

I figured you were the first guy through the process of elimination. You can sleep well complimented tonight. :D

Coming soon... A funny little short, "Irk" made with the adapter featured in this post. Should be done in about a week, I'll post a link here as well as in a couple other forum categories.

Screen Patterns?

Screen Patterns?

I addressed this before and got no response. I see a pattern in the shots outside along sharp edges. Could you tell us what caused this. I am making an adapter with an ee-s but don't want to see this pattern.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to. It would be very helpful if you could mention which shot/s specifically (they're labeled) and specifically where in the image this pattern is seen, and what it looks like.

If some of the GG pattern IS showing, it was probably because I had the f-stop on my DVX set too high. When I get it to f8 or f9, I start to see a little something. So as long as it's at f6.8 or lower it should be fine. It was a very bright day out when I shot that footage, and didn't think to use my ND filters (which I probably should have).

Specifically, watch the edges around the house and the cars headlight closely. It looks jagged.

Sealing focusing screen

Sealing focusing screen

What's the secret to keep dust off the focusing screen? Have you sealed it successfully?

Yes I have. It is mounted between two UV filters. One of which is sealed off from getting any dust on it, the other I simply keep a can of dust off around if any dust gets on it (the UV filter that is, NOT the focusing screen, it is safe)

Dust

Dust

How on earth did you get them all assembled without getting dust in there? I have tried several times and no matter what I do, there is still small amounts of dust and they soon get onto the focusing screen through static.

Take a look at this thread to see my first short shot with this adapter:

Right here.

Some screen grabs...

Some screen grabs...

I recently shot a short to further play with the adapter. It didn't end up having any sort of real story, and is only 45 seconds long, but, here are a few screen grabs from it. I was going for a film noir look, hopefully that's obvious. The glow and CC were done in post. In retrospect I should've had a rear edge light in that first shot. Special thanks to my friend Vicki, for being the very patient talent that late night. :)

Question about extension tube

Question about extension tube

My extension tube for this project has many edges on the outside and screws apart. I find that it barely fits into the PVC tube. Did you unscrew yours before placing it into the pvc tube? Mine fits so tight that there is no need to dremel out the section for the knob because it doesn't even reach the PVC edge.

Yes, I didn't use the entire tube. I think my extension tube had three sections, and I used two out of the three, which two I'm not sure.
