How to crop video to 2.35 in Avid Xpress Pro

I wanted to crop some of my HVX footage in Xpress pro. Not just put bars on the video, but actually crop it so that it is just a 2.35 aspect video.

Xpress Pro is a video based editing product and thus adheres to video XY resolutions and aspect ratios. That is either going to be 4:3 or 16:9. The content within those aspect ration can be different such as 1.85 or 2.35 (actually 2.40 since 2.35 went out in the 70's). Cropping to the exact 2.35 aspect ratio can be done in an external program like Sorenson Squeeze for the deliverable that meets your needs.

Thank you! God, I'd love to never see the word 2.35 ever again. 2.39 is the official ratio given to anamorphic (called 2.40 for reference many times) It's simply been wrongfully referred to for decades by people who do not know any better.

Why do people in the Avid forums ignore questions? If it's a stupid question just let me know rather than just ignoring it.

It's been awhile since I edited on Avid Nitris, but I don't think there are any editing program that have native anamorphic timeliens but only because traditional film and HD cameras never natively shoot anamorphic. ALL anamorphic productions are shot with anamorphic lenses which are squeezed onto a normal aspect ratio/ format, and then unsqueezed during preview or presentation.

I am a DP, though, not a post guy, so that is just my understanding based on how it is shot.

Under the effect menu in avid, you have mask options that will allow you to change aspect ratios. You should apply the mask on a upper video layer.
