The DVX and Hour Meter

Greetings. My new DVX is showing 00005 on the hour meter even though I've shot less that 45min. of footage. Am I to assume that the meter starts 'ticking' when I turn the camera on and not necessarily when tape is rolling?

Cheers,

John

I believe thats true... If you use a firestore or DVrack with no tape I believe the hours are recorded just the same.

John;
The meter is always ticking if your are powered up with a tape in the camera. I'm not so sure about the previous post with Firestore or DV Rack. I think the heads have to be engaged to be racking up hour count, and the ehads are not engaged when using ONLY a firestore or DV Rack to capture.

If there is a tape in and you are powered up it makes sense that they would be counting, as the heads are engaged. This also applies to playback and capturing using the DVX100, all of that uses the heads and ups the hours.

Ministersin,

Thanks very much for the feedback. Would that mean, then, that while exploring the camera (it's new and I'm learning about it) it would be better not to have a tape in while it's on and I'm experimenting?

Cheers,

John

Yes that is very true. I mean it's not like it's a delicate flower or anything. If you take decent care of it the heads they'll get 1000 hours before they need replaced, but I wouldn't use them for watching and capturing. And yeah if you're just playing with settings and stuff, no sense in wasting it.

Brain,

Thanks again. Wish I'd known that sooner. Live and learn...otherwise there's not much point. Look forward to checking out 'The Lukewarm Bath'.

Cheers,

John

John;
You can use ANY MiniDV deck or camera to transfer recordings from the DVX100 to your computer without loss of quality or problems (including 24P footage, even if that camera doesn't support 24P).

Though this is not exactly accurate, think of it like this:
Your DVX100 is recording 0101010101010 to a magnetic tape. Anything that can read that magnetic tape can transer the binary information to your computer.
