portable dvd player as external monitor – any suggestions?

I've been searching for a solution for this too. I finally found a post recommending this one here. I'm just basically looking for a screen that's a little larger and not attached to the camera myself, so I don't care if it's not an HD monitor. I just want a larger screen than the little flip out on my camera. So I'm thinking about getting this based on what I've read. But I'd like to try it out before I buy it.

P.S. it's not a DVD player, just a monitor. But you could buy a cheap little dvd player to it. :)

That's not a bad idea. If I could find a used one I'd be all set.

all i can say, if that is your picture, you shouldn't be behind the camera but in front of it,

NICE

i'm finally buying this:

Varizoom VZ TFT7 Kit

any feedback?

cheers,

Hi Elena,

Great choice based on your needs. And despite some of the remarks by others, you'll find other benefits besides framing. For instance, you'll find it's much easier to see video noise (with excessive gain settings), relative impact of tweaking camera, lighting, set changes, etc.

If you plan to shoot for extended periods without power, you'll probably want to buy an extra battery (charging one while using the other). By the way, be sure to get a Sunhood (and shoemount).

Finally, if you're shoots are basic studio work (I see you're into films), the 7 inch monitor should be okay. But if you anticipate a lot of event video, a smaller 5 inch monitor might be a better choice. On that note, you'll find the 7" Varizoom regularly shows up on the dvxuser Classified posts (and other forums) if you're looking for a used unit.

Warm Regards, Michael

@BWyldeck

Varizoom VZ TFT7 Monitor is powered by a battery with a 2 hour charge. If you're shooting indoors, on a tripod / static camera, you could plug it in directly to an electrical outlet (the cable is not so long for dolly shots, but if you have a long extension cord, i suppose you could pull it off).

I highly recommend purchasing the kit (as opposed to the monitor alone) because it comes with all the necessary accessories (shoemount, sunhood, car charger, padded case...).

Feedback-wise: I used the camera+7 inch monitor setup in a variety of situations: indoor shoot (static+dolly) and outdoors. Found it an excellent aid for framing purposes. Focus ok. But obviously the actual picture quality is average. Overall, I'm really glad I picked it – it was an excellent fit for my production needs.

As moonlitnite suggests, I would probably buy an extra monitor battery for a longer outdoor shoot, since the 1 1/2 - 2 hour capacity is quite limiting.

cheers,

I bought this one

I have yet to try it out in a production situation, but it's still better than using the viewfinder. Especially when I have to be my own lighting stand-in, which means I have to be on the other side of the camera.
I almost didn't buy it til I read some good reviews. I mean, it's clearly trying to look like Sony, with it's logo. The only thing is, you have to get an RCA adapter to connect the two male ends together. Not a big deal. It's only for previewing after all.

I made my own camera jib, and it's pretty hard to frame something when your up high on the cameras lcd. I bought the Initial IDM-1210 10.2 inch portable DVD player. It works very well. It has a nice big screen in comparison to the 7 or 8 inch dvd players, and its pretty thin.

I looked at Sony's, panasonic, lg, rca and a few more.. and for 175$ the Initial beat them all, especialy in quality.
