To owners of HD-DVD players, including me--

Definitely. Paramount is exclusively HD DVD for at least all of 2008 but (depending on similar contracts it may have) Universal may very well jump ship or at least start releasing in both formats very soon...

The Digital Bits has a good write up on the announcement.

There isn't any hope left for HD-DVD anymore... Mindshare will drift even more to Blu-ray.

With majority of studio support, and all the news reporting on this, as well as word of mouth, people will finally be able to confidently choose a format... and its blu... which will cause Universal to waiver in there support of HD-DVD... supporting a Dying format.. and watching their revenues plummet because of it... just a matter of time before they go neutral... (PR spin) then all blu..

Paramount will likely be the only holdout.. due to their $150 mill payoff and contract.

I await my free Blu-Ray movies in the mail.

hurray for PS3.

i'm sure there is an "out" in that contract somewhere... meaning that Paramount's exclusivity is contingent on HD-DVD being able to sustain certain numbers. whether that be player sales, or holding a minimum percentage of the market. Paramount wouldn't have locked themselves into one format under all circumstances.

That's a mighty big piece of a mighty big pie right there.

Either Paramount or Universal switches, and it's all over if you ask me.

at this point, they have to see that it is over and are formulating their strategy to segue to the dominant format.

Blu-ray? HD-DVD? Don't believe the hype.

Betamax is, and will always BE, the BEST video format.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD aren't video formats... optical formats... but the both support the same VIDEO Foramts.

Technically beta outlasted VHS and is still being used..

BETA LIVES!

So now, here is my question. Since all of my HD-DVD's will soon be outdated has there been any break through in taking HD-DVD's and ripping them to your computer? I have already decided to stop investing in HD-DVD, but I don't want to have to re-buy my small but expensive HD-DVD collection, so I would like to rip it to my computer and view it on my XBOX 360. There is nothing illegal about doing this, but I know the new copy protection is so fierce that even archiving my own collection is almost impossible.

I'm glad this is close to over. It is better for the industry if everyone distributes to the consumer-side in one "format". The war over Blu-ray and HD-DVD has done only one thing well and that is make consumers nervous to adopt HD playback in their homes. Anyone who is purchasing now can surely remember their investments in VHS, Beta or LaserDisc.

The sooner Paramount and Universal move over to Blu-ray, the sooner we'll all enjoy the benefits of <$200 players. Then we can all sit back and write content for less and watch the the manufacturers duke it out over features 90% of users won't ever use.

Look at where SD DVD ended up. They're literally expendables now, with HDMI "1080i" upconvert versions at less than $30. That is what the studios need most.

Actually, in my humble opinion, I'd kindly suggest that the studios should shift their focus entirely toward developing relationships and technology the brings HDVOD to anyone with a digital hook-up. I watch HDDVR content much more than DVD and live broadcast combined.

Did you even read your own post?

That new AVC Disc format you made up makes me want to sell my PS3... Unless you are confusing the AVC (h.264) video format as a disc format.. but then I'd say refer to my first sentence...

....seriously... what?

Mike; please pay a little more attention to your typing. Your posts can be a little hard to read sometimes. Thanks.

Well weather anyone likes it or not - I will tell you how me as just one consumer feels. Looking at the numbers blu ray has enough of the pie for me to go that way, I might suggest others will feel this way also. How Sony has achieved this is totally irrelevant for me. As a content producer I dont really want to be stuffing around with dual format in the future so the sooner this ends the better of I am. And I am not averse to one large multinational more than I am to any other (unless one has shinning labour/environmental practices then that could sway me).

I will cast my vote in the next week or so... count one more for blu ray.
