Hey all,

So I just finished my first narrative!

This was made for one of my 300 level junior media production courses at college.

The assignment was to write, produce, shoot and edit a 5-9min narrative short with no dialog.
The basic premise was to teach us to "show" not "tell" a story.
This was a very interesting project because we had to rely heavily on symbols and motifs to "show" our story.

I wrote, shot, directed, produced and edited this all by myself.
Of corse I had an amazing crew, and an equally amazing cast, and I would not have been able to do it without them.

(We also had to create an original 10sec countdown clock)

With that said I will let you enjoy the movie I spend three months planning and shooting!

I would love to hear any questions and comments.

If you are interested I also made a 10min Behind The Scenes reel.

It does have explicit content...

Although it was extremely tough, aggravating and time consuming, we all really had a great time doing this project, and I think you will see that when you watch this.

********Some interesting stuff:

Almost 98% of the movie was done ADR. Especially the first scene, we shot with no mics because there was a road right next to the forest with a lot of traffic and it took away form the "desolate" feel i wanted.

I think i do sound design pretty good, it took 6hrs just to do the sound in the first scene, but it was a really great learning experience!

Also, for the slow motion parts, that is real 60fps slow mo (with the DVX) and adobe after effects... Of corse with he help of thomas worth and his amazing 24p slow motion tutorial: http://rarevision.com/v1/articles/slow_motion.php

any other questions just ask!

hey just got done watching it. i liked it. good visuals. i really liked the forest, when he's looking up and you really get a feel for how deep he's in the hole (figuratively). the one problem i had was the lighting on the door when the people said "f*** you". it looked lit. it didnt look natural. overall good job!

Thanks for the comments!

I know it didn't look natural, i was going for that. Since it is a flashback i wanted it to be reasonably harsh and unnatural.

But thanks for the comment.

Hey,

I felt this needed a CC. Im downloading it now do you mind if i color it? I can send it to you after...Im just really interested as to what I can do with this in terms of CC

Really neat short, shots, and editing!

yea thats fine... i would be interested to see the difference..

i did color correct the last scene in the basement, but that was just to match the shots from different days....

are you talking about making it more vibrant? if so i wanted it to be drab like it is....

also in terms of CC what program do you use? i just did it in final cut.

I like it.... looks like you did a little more then CC (like a special contrast filter or something)

i do like it, but i like the way mine is hahah, i think the way you have it give it an unnecessary novel over stylized grudge look.

i was wondering how you gave me a direct blip link like that? i would love to know because i would prefer to send people a link like that instead of sending them to my blip page...

you can leave the rest of the CC alone... i got enough from that sample

thanks for taking the time, that was really cool

Hey, thanks.

on your video page, go to your right and down a bit and youll see

Download this file

click that and it will bring you to a full screen, lonely video with nothing around it!

i just right clicked that also to download it.

...have you watched "requiem for a dream" lately? haha. you pretty much jacked that drug montage from the movie. other than that, you had some good shots, but i wasn't really feeling your choice with the whole flashback lighting.

yea someone else said that.... it was just an aesthetic choice on my part... i like it, but some dont....

as far as requiem... yea i have seen some of it and yes thats where i got the idea from, but those kind of shots are in so many other movies, like; boogie nights, shaun of the dead and a few others i have seen but cant remember....

i tried to re-create those type of shots best i could

como, what exactly did you do to give it that sharper look? Like he said it looks like more than just CC

and to the OP, I liked it a lot. Everything was well composed for the most part, a lot of free hand which sometimes seemed a bit out of place/confusing because you wasn't sure at times if it was POV or not, but overall very very impressive.

overall very very impressive.

i appriciate the possitve feedback...

And yes i get what you are saying about the handheld shots.
one of them was thrown in for continuity sake (in scene 1)
and the others in the night scene were POV's. and as far as the steady cam shots in the last scene, i wanted the camera movment to change along with the mnotivation of the story -- IE when he is sitting the shots are smooth and or static and when he finally realizes he need to change his like the camera movements follow his thought process.

if that makes any sense...

PS. the shot when he walks and looks up at the trees is an ode to Emmanuel Lubezki & Alfonso Cuarón for that same exact shot in children of men.
