Aplpe Cinema Monitors worth the expense?

Yup - I'm back with yet more silly noobie questions. I am in need of a monitor for editing. I just bought a MacPro, and the Apple monitors are just so expensive. I know they are very nice, but... are they really worth their price? Are there other alternatives worth considering? One monitor vs. two???

I will be shooting some HD footage for business use, but most customer videos will be output to DVD's.

Thanks again!!

Give the gateway 24" widescreen a look too, its a pretty impressive monitor. I prefer to work with 2 20" non-widescreen monitors. Its the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Have work with 2 20" widescreens before and I just like having the extra space the squarer monitor gives.

i was about to buy an apple 23" a week or two ago. but compared side by side even the samsung monitors looked better. i dont know whats happening, the cinemas used to be way better???

get a dell if you can find one!

No, get a Dell 2407 instead.

The Dell's are nice displays, but your decision could be influenced by what you intend to use the display for. For example, if you are planning to use it to monitor HD from FCP using the Matrox MXO, the consensus from Shane Ross and others is that the MXO produces its best results with the Apple Cinema Display. In any event, I agree with Ned's advice to wait for MacWorld.

I've just read a bunch of threads on monitors, and a few reviews. I'm looking for a pretty large monitor for my MacPro. From what I can tell, the two best options are the Dell 3007 WFP-HC or the Smasung SyncMaster 305T. The review I read said the Dell was far better than the Samsung.

Does anyone have expereince with either of these monitors? Is there a different monitor I should consider? (I see that Gateway has a 30", but it is almost as much as the Apple at US$1699.)

I got a new mac pro back in April? and got apple cinema displays... Each to his own but I think they kick arse compared others I have seen, and Im always looking at other set ups.

I have had the Dell 2405 for about two years, it's awesome. That said, I trust Shane and several others who I have read reviews from.

1. If using for just a computer monitor, the Dells are the best bang for the buck
2. If using with the Matrox MXO, (color correction and accuracy), go for the Apples as Shane recommends.

I have a pair of the Apple 23" displays on my Avid system at work. I wish they would have got the Dell's.

I agree with this.

We've had a 30-inch ACD for about a year. Absolutely gorgeous.

The Dell is about $700.00 and the Apple 23 is about $899.00

I've had (2) 20" Ultrasharp dells for about 2yrs now, and I have to say that although the image is great and bright, both of them showed a burn in on the edges. This goes away more or less if I turn the monitor off for some time, but then returns after some time of them being on.

And I've also heard my brother who does IT for a huge company say that the dells suck. So for bang for your buck they are great but for longevity, I wouldn't recommend them.

Now, this was the 20" monitors and from 2yrs ago. I also use them at their highest resolution 1600x1200 and I can't imagine its my graphics card provoking this. Nvidia Quadro FX3450. So who knows, the 24" ones might not have this problem, or maybe by now they have fixed it.

If I were buying today, I'd get the Gateways 24" I've seen them at the store and they look great, they also take in RGB component HD video, and their image seems fantastic.
