3rd Los Angeles HVX200 User Group Meeting

For sure! That's what we did with the 2 adapters Saturday.

No, Saturday the SGPro was on Matt's camera (right?) and the Letus was on your camera.
What he means is that for a 100% fair test all adapters would have to be fitted to the same HVX instead of different HVX's
This would add a lot of time to the test, but it would ensure continuity of the highest possible level.

Hi Faith,
I think you are misunderstanding what Matt is saying. In order to make a fair comparison, you have to use the same exact physical camera. Your HVX is different than my HVX. (slightly, but different.) My lens might not be aligned as well as yours. Yours might let more light in. I know its Panasonic and they should have a tight tolerance level, but nothing is made identical.

Also, you should use the exact same lens. Same issues here. my 100mm is not equal to your 100mm, scratches, made different years, etc.....

So now you need a room that has only artificial light, a good source of light that will remain constant. A set where things won't move to much and an actor that will remain still for hours. You also want to see the bokeh so you will need some depth to the room, and something bright behind it.

Then you need to document exactly what you did with one adapter and each lens, etc.... And duplicate all that with the next adapter. Also, the adapters need to be calibrated as best they can. No sense in making a comparison, if for some reason one of the adapters is not calibrated as best as it can be. They all need a new battery, etc....

And if you are going through this trouble, I'd get a good light meter and make sure the light remains constant throughout the test. Also some really good Color Charts, and some Focusing Charts. (these are expensive. could run $600 to $1200 or so) But if this is going to be done then why not do it right.

So its a little more complicated to do a test than you thought. the time has just quadrupled from your initial assessment.

A for this weekend, I would have to let you know Thursday or Friday. Things have been very hectic with my monitor and my day job and a few other inventions I'm working on.

I am looking at exactly that. I want to see the Bokeh of Nikon or other popular lenses with the Brevis and with it's different elements! I am hoping it will resemble the SGpro and M2 as much as possible and from an other thread it seems it might.

Matt (Mushy Productins) on "I F%!@# HATE YOU!" with his SGpro along side a Brevis and from what they gather they matched each other very well. Promising!

That's ok... I am trying to check out the Brevis now... I've seen all others and I can always look at the web sites for a refresher.

OK, so this comparing of the adapters seems like way too much of a project now. I am going to have to pass.

But I do have another idea, which I think is a GOOD idea.

I really liked how we all pooled our experiences at the meet, and are able to collaborate or network, etc... I propose we keep tight as a LA user group by (if it is possible) keeping a thread going for us here on the dvxuser forum. This way we can communicate with each other regularly, invite each other to get togethers, whether social or practice etc... And also keep abreast of each of our projects and progress.

In short, let's stay connected and not lose touch until the next distant meeting.

David, what do you think about this idea? Would the forum allow us to keep a LA users thread going?

Faith, that is a great idea. I would like it if it can be private to the group. Many boards allow for this. Can you give us a private section, mods?

That doesn't mean we don't open up the invitation again to all next time we meet, it just gives us a private area for those who met to carry on discussions started at the party and to deal with local issues and specifics to our group.

I enjoyed meeting everyone at the event. Really nice people. Thanks to everyone who brought their great toys to show, to DC for organizing this in a busy time and thanks to our kind hostess.

The adapter shoot-out isn't a big project really

_ Whomever hosts it has to set up a few different subjects like a plant, teddy bear, and a few other things and a chair for the talent to always be in the same sppt....
_ Then also throw in there two little lights, and make sure it is a room with no windows or also block the window...
_ Then have the camera ready with the settings agreed to on the thread prior to the test...
_ Then the other adapters with their respective owners show up the next day for the actual test (hopefully someone brings a chart to put in the frame)
_ Start off by calibrating the adapter from the host (everyone should partake in the calibration for every adapter) and shoot a series of settings which should also be agreed upon prior, on the thread.
_ Then it is a matter of switching out adapters and repeating...

Tops 2hs with 4 adapters if done effectively... it might end up being more like 3hs done leisurely... just make it a 4hs meeting and start right away. Left over time is for chatter.

Do you guys think we need a private area? I can see pros and cons of doing it that way. Personally I don't have anything to hide so public is A-Ok by me.

Let's hear from the other LA users...

I think a sub-section on here for the "Los Angeles HVX200 User Group" would be a great idea. I'd even be glad to moderate it. Let me check with Jarred . . .

Too cool :)...

Well I don't know about you guys, but I am currently doing a time lapse while at the office. I decided to film a cloud time lapse reflection in my glasses. what he heck, let's see what it looks like.

Also wanted to share a few photos of a shoot I did with Daniel two nights ago, this is my first time DPing, I did everything from set design to lighting to camera etc... We shot a mock / practice scene so i can test my adapter, lenses and lighting abilities (or lack thereof LOL).

Look at the monitor to see what the end result was:

OK, so behind the scenes, the lighting set up didn't look pretty BUT it did yield nice results on camera:

Look at the 24 inch monitor and see the cool, moody lighting we ended up with:

I'll post screen grabs when I get my PC back (will I EVER get it back????) GRRR

Bye for now!

Somebody has been shopping at Home Depot. Faith, you are so hardcore!

Actually those are Lowell lights, but since I only have two right now, I had to pul the ol' garage flood lights out... I already had those, for when I work on my hotrod at night... Actually they work really good, but are not balanced and have no barn doors, but I used black aluminum wrap and made a cone with it to route my light and reduce spilling. Then I used my only C-stand to hang a blue gel in front of it... Hey, whatever works!

Oh and guys: GUESS YOU JUST CAME HOME WITH A SACHTLER HEAD?

:))))))

I also got me a porta brace hard case with wheels so I can keep my adapter screwed to my camera now and 'travel' locally that way, the 6 lenses go around the camera, in the foam. I hope this will work out good for me.

everyone in the store was like: WHAT IS THIS? Pointing to the Lx. So I went on and on about 35 mm adapter and the Letus... Looks like I knew more about this than all the salespeople put together: And I don't even work there!! LOL
