What Screw on filter is best just for lens protection?

What kind of screw on filter is best to use to protect the lens? Also, can the lens hood still be used in conjunction with this filter?
 
I use a B+W 82mm lens, stock hood fits on but i do have to take it off to mount a wide angle adapter
 
I have been selling UV filters until one of the head guys at Formatt told me not to because it is still "filtering". He said that in the case with the HD cameras, you don't want your lens protector to have ANY effect on your light. So he recommended the Optical Flat. It's cheaper too. If you search around a bit, Barry Green and some others talked about some comparisons between no lens protector and a Tiffen UV filter and the results were pretty interesting.
