SGpro r3 flip module footage

Hi guys,

We have managed to upload a few shots we took last weekend with the SGpro r3 and the new flip module. I'm no camera man, so forgive the shaky footage :) We want to go and shoot some better stuff, but time was against us this month, and British weather is mighty cold! As in my other post, we are looking for UK shooters to meet to test the flip rig.

Shot with the Sony FX1e in 25p, using Canon FD lenses. The FX1 had either ND 1 or 2 on all the time.

We decided to shoot where we did because the scene gives some good elements to test the rig. The plants in the foreground are a good test for sharpness and detail, the balcony rails are a good test for distortion and the bright sky and distant background being a good test grain and chroma aberration.

Please pay particular attention to the 'bokeh rendition'. This is something we have worked very hard on, to achieve realistic bokeh.

Download link (4 minutes, 66MB wmv, 600x337 with music) please right click and 'save as' (sorry for the bad choice in music):

Below are a few grabs:

And a pic of the complete rig (missing from the pic is the tripod connection plate):

Please let us know what you guys think. We are launching the new shoot35 website on Thursday, showcasing the latest footage and new packages :)

Looks good. Will there be a price change for the standard SGPro without the flip attachment?

Edit: Actually, talking about price. How much is the flip attachment going to cost? And also these new packages you mention, what will be included in these? And how much will they cost? Thanks!

>:-) i think i may be able to help you out with the footage wayne.... but i need a riser plate! check your spam folder, ive been obsessivly emailing you..... haha....

i agree, the bokeh is no doubt the nicest out of all the adapters i've seen, up to date. Quite impressive indeed. What is the total light loss with the adapter + 50mm F1.4, along with the camera F-stop loss due to zooming in to the GG, i.e. final camera aperture?

PapPa,
Results of my careful tests with an SGPro rev2 on an HVX:

( no flip on brevis or SG but it sounds like that is negligeable to light loss - BTW These results compared to the Letus are different from Tim Naylor's on his Rev3- who knows why - Wayne says Rev2 and Rev3 are identical optics.)
These results are at odds with some of the claims you read on the forum so take them all with your own grains of salt. I own & like all three so there was no bias.

w/ Nikkor 85mm @ f1.4 and HVX wide open
Brevis lost about .5 stop
SGPro .6 stop
Letus 1 stop (if I correct for greater zoom-in because the Letus is offset on HVX then maybe the loss on a centered adapter would be .85)

w/ Nikkor @ f2.8
Brevis still .5 stop loss
SGPro 1.2 stops
Letus 1.6 stops

Hey Wayne - Wouldn't you like to have a tester out in San Francisco?maybe it will behave differently on this side of the world.

Bokeh rendition looks beautiful!
Would be great to see some real testings with resolution chart, and some hard figures on the light loss.

I can fully support that, he could provide the professional footage your adapter deserves!

Looking forward to seeing the update of your site as well... next year, is my adapter year :)

Best,
Max.

Yes, we have the non flipped SGpro on sale now for £399 with a free flight case.

Hi Tim, my hotmail is no longer active, so I have not received any of your emails. Could you contact me via sales@shoot35.com

Wow, I love my extreme , but you that Bokeh is impressive. What is the light loss of SG plus flipl?

Total lightloss from the SGpro + flip module is just over 1 stop. We could have designed the SGpro with less lightloss, however this will compromise the 'bokeh rendition'. We have designed the SGpro towards the best quality image and aethetic.

We plan to do more testing in the new year.

yea the sg to me strikes the best balance between sharpness bokeh and lightloss. it just overall looks best to me, personally. now with the flip its got convenience too....... :)

I love the sg pro as well. The edge to edge sharpness and bokeh are the best i've seen. I just wish I could get one sooner then a month!

lo,

lo,

As mentioned in the first post, the new website will be launched either tomorrow night or Thursday.

cheers wayne,

ah sorry thanks for that info. seems that i didnt read that. sorrybout that. yippiyiyeah mofker.

Just an observation, I think a slight redesign to the SGPro "box" i.e. making the height of the "box" shorter would help so that it looks better when integrated with the flip module and more compact. Right now, the whole thing looks big!

Nevertheless, congrats for pushing the SGPro this far! Looking forward to the new website!

I've taken my sg apart. Because it's a "spinning" GG, I don't think it could be made much shorter. Also the center of the lens mount is at the perfect height for most matte boxes (non-flip). The platter is much larger than a vibrating GG. On the upside, there's not much in that box - so it doesn't weigh as much as it looks. Get a shoulder mount set up and you're fine. Concerning what's big, it's still small compared to broadcast and film cameras.

re: RichardVClark
Regarding sharpness, I found the LEX to be slightly sharper in the A/B tests I did as well as have about 1/3 to 1/2 stop less light loss. Oddly enough the difference in sharpness became negligible when I used the sharpest lens I've ever tested - the Nikon 70-200 2.8. The only theory I have on this is that the GG on the SG is less contrasty (more diffuse) than the LEX. This accounts for it's brilliant bokeh. The older manual Nikons are definitely less contrasty than the new zooms. So between the old manual Nikons (85mm 1.4 Ai) and the SG's GG, the lower contrast gets mutiplied between the two by a considerably larger factor than with the Nikon 70-200 2.8.

I'll be purchasing a flip module for my SG soon. The million dollar question I have for Wayne is: is it any sharper (being a different achromat) than the non-flip?

Also, the only suggestion I have for all the new rod mount alternatives is: instead of raising the camera, how about designing a lower cost alternative to the Z riser and just raise the adaptor? I begrudgingly shelled out for my Z riser and wished somebody made something like it for less. having the camera lower to the shoulder with a lower overall CG really makes a difference. Aaton figured that out in Super 16, making it a much better alternative than Arri (in my opinion) for all out hand held work.

None of the adaptor makers make handheld kits or monitor mount hardware or at least package it. Perhaps it's not economically viable, but the moment you strap on all that gear, lens, etc. the first that you think of is: how do I get this on my shoulder comfortably.

Note for Wayne: Video I did on SG for Cezar will soon be released for broadcast. Will keep you posted.
