For You 3D and RUSH Fans

I think the best Neil reference ever has to be in Family Guy, when they cut to Chester Cheetah (the Cheetos mascot) and he's sitting on the couch snorting coke and listening to "Tom Sawyer."

Classic.

Poor Como.

Being a drummer, I can assure you that every drummer alive dreams of being as good as either of these guys.

The thing about Neil I respect is that he was already considered a god among rock drummers when he went back to the basics, got an experienced jazz instructor and re-learned everything.

Is he the best drummer ever? Maybe, maybe not. But he's up there with the greats, and he is arguably the most proficient and skilled rock drummer of all time.

I'm glad Rush is up for a grammy. But I doubt they will ever have the popular and widespread appeal of a lot of other bands. But you never know.

Como... yeah I found that at the same time... pretty funny :-)

The other issue is the little clicks, sticks, and misses that can blend in with a solo anyway... pay attention to one of NP's solos and see how many of those you count.

Woah, scary...

my opinion:

Neil is a great drummer, seems pretty smooth.

But I STILL think, on the Led zeppelin CD, how the west was won, the last song (i think)

a 20 minute song. 18 minutes of it is my John Banaum and it is absolutely amazing. It sounds like there is 3 or 4 different drummers at one point.

John Bonham was a great natural drummer with chops.

Neil Peart TECHNICALLY blows him away. But John Bonham could groove better, IMO.

JASON Bonham, is the best of both worlds, he has his father's easy style, but is also a master of technique like Neil.

Which reminds me, I gotta pick up Led Zep tickets for their MSG show!

You nailed the drumming. Does anyone in the states even know who Rush is?
I guess a couple.

That was very nice.

Those guys played the local pub here many years back and I've seen them since in proper concert whatever since then.

Again, that was cool. Enjoyed it.

I know who Rush is

I grew up a total Rush fan. They changed my entire outlook as a kid. Danny Carey is another favorite. I remember getting so worked up over who was better than who as far as musicans. My buddy Pete and I used to air drum our asses off to Rush when we were in the 9th grade. Rofl, we used to play on cardboard boxes we loved Peart so much. If someone would say ____ is better than Peart we'd jump down their throats.

I guess as you grow older everything gets so much more relative. Some days chocolate is the best thing ever, and other times you can't even taste it (chocolate + mountain dew.) But during those times when you can't enjoy something you normally love you can still look upon it fondly for the experiences its given.

My wife just fell victim to a similar thing. She brought home the kids a DVD from her own childhood. It was an animated movie from the early 80's called The Last Unicorn which I guess she was just insane about when she was 9 or whatever. Seeing it now was a whole difference experience for her. Cheezy everything. The two boys (2 and 4) were like "WTF??" Don't get me wrong though, I can still listen to Rush today and rock out because it's really great music. I just don't cream myself everytime there's a drumfill or Alex plays a scale. The Jacob's Ladder live guitar solo (Exit Stage Left) still gives me a chill in my spine though, I have to admit.

You ARE kidding right?
I bet that there are more Rush fans in the US than in CANADA!

Sorry bout taking so long to reply and if I rant too long here.

Actually no I was not kidding. At one time, not too long ago, mentioning Rush to any (most) US'rs was met with who? So I'm honestly a little surprised you (dvx US masses) know who they are and like them.

For most of thier careers Rush have been Canadian Icons. Never breaking the border. Glad to see, for their sake, that has finally changed.

I agree with the mindset that I seldom play their records, yet I still own the original Fly By Night (LP) and others and when I DO listen to them, well, it's Rush isn't it.

Drummers, while I'm here, and I grunt as I say this, another of the best live drummers I've ever seen (and I'm not detracting from Neil Peart, god of all gods) I believe was named 'Joe'? who filled in for a Genesis concert back around 81,82? or something. Wow. All of these years I've been asking who that guy was and I think two people said Joe something. Man.

//'84 I think.

Hmmm, maybe it looks that way from North of the Border. Like I said earlier, Rush isn't quite as popular here as they are in their native land, but their concerts have sold out for decades here, and all (or almost all ) of their albums hane gone either gold or platinum in the US. Never won a grammy, or have even been nominated (that I know of) until this year, and the only songs you hear on the radio are Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart , Working Man and the occasional Fly by Night. But their following has always been strong, ever since 2112. Growing up in NYC, I can remember the star from 2112 in graffiti all over the busses and subways.
