"Inspiration" - Music Video - HVX/M2/NIKON

Hey everyone,

Shot this video back in May or June I think. Recently got permission to post it online.

We shot for three days, one camera, mostly HVX+M2 (720p) but there are some stock HVX shots mixed in there. Fairly decent lighting package, a couple 2ks, an arri kit, and some zip lights. Lots of handheld, lots of stick, no dolly or steadicam (although it would have helped!) I've shot a lot of M2 material but this is some of my favorite footage to date.

The song is 'Inspiration' by Lola Fair and Baby J. I think their album is dropping this Christmas.

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

I used a 24mm (2.8), 50mm (1.4) and a 135mm (2.8). By and far, the majority of it was shot on the 50mm due to time constraints; there is some 24 with the wife and daughter (their story) and a lot of 135 with the performers. I think all of the military footage was shot with the 50 exclusively.

Awesome work Geoff. Some of the shorts looked pretty video-ish, but all of the militarystuff looked very filmic. Did you use a faster shutter for some of those shots?

Thanks for sharing.

A good deal of the military footage was either 36fps at 1/120 or 24fps at 1/60. I like shooting 1/120 but when I do so, I also need to open up one or two stops to compensate for the 'spiraling' ground glass artifacts which become more apparent. That's one of my biggest peeves when shooting with a 35 adapter. Of course it's subjective, but I often have to compensate how I shoot (shutter/f-stop) due to that technological limitation. I'm anxious to test a Letus Extreme to see how it copes with high shutters.

Hey I just watched the actual video and it brought a tear to my eye. I loved everything about it. VERY inspirational.

Geoff,

The footage itself is an inspiration. Coupled with the audio and I'm really blow away.
I would like. I think I see the GC what you speak of (some of the footage has this soft haze on it), I don't mind I'm just taking notice.

Well done: Colors / pacing / audio - in the beginning with the soldiers (hope it wasn't post audio). Overall great stuff.

Thanks guys!

Yea, the beginning intro was fun to shoot. All the dialogue was grabbed on location. The sound editing, design and mix was created by Matt Parra, a friend of mine working in sound over at Sony Pictures. He's phenomenally talented.

Very nice, Geoff.

How did you have your camera rigged in the field? I assume you had an onboard monitor and a focus puller? Did you use a Zacuto shoulder mount? How'd you work those kind of logistics?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Bill, I mounted an HD 'SWIT' Monitor from Varizoom on the top handle of the HVX. No focus puller or FF system for this shoot nor a shoulder mount; I'd grip the rails with my left hand for front support and to adjust focus, right hand holding onto top mount. I've done this a lot, so I've gotten pretty decent at getting stable moves and adjusting focus on the fly in this setup. Thanks for checking out the video.

completely blown away(again). I had seen some behind the scenes photos of this shoot before and was anxious to see the final cut. i knew it would be good...but dang--i didn't even realize you were that good. haha! how'd you guys pull off all the rain shots? it was a tad too dense of a shower for me--looked a bit unrealistic. but im no rain expert...so.

oh, and it looks like towards the end of this you had your own part on screen. congrats!

Thanks for checking it out :) With the rain, I had my gaffer up on the roof of the home with a garden hose. He was a good 15 feet up so it enabled us to have a wide spread. Very cheaply done! And yea, we needed an actor so I just did that little role at the end on the stoop.
