How would i put an Image on an Image

Ive seen in a few music videos and such, the editors or who ever would make a TV or some object in the scene, play a small clip on the screen of it. Kinda like it was playing through a dvd player or something.

I wanna make a the next clip in my sequence play in a broken/unplugged computer monitor.

Would i film the Monitor standing there (obviously) then in AF mask the same size square as the monitor, and put that mask square on the clip i want, then put it on top of the main clip?

sorry its kinda confusing. ill try and find an example.

Would be easier to cut a "green screen" (bright green paper) mask for the actual monitor, stick it on the screen and shoot the monitor scene. Then you don't have to make a precise mask in post, just use a matte and put your monitor footage on the layer below.

Does that make sense?

If the camera is static you can skip the screen step and just do a 4 point garbage matte to extract the section. If the edge is feathered lightly it should look reasonably natural.

thanks guys! hmmm, i wish i knew how to green screen, like set it up in AE. I got the whole production part down with equal lighting etc...

I think ill try n just mask it.

Just do a search here for green screen or compositing.

There are some very good tutorials out there and as long as you have a good software package and decent hardware set up you will be fine.

How "broken" does the monitor have to be?

Could you actually play the video on the monitor and make it appear broken? Perhaps a cracked piece of glass on the front? Or even have the actual video be broken up like the screen was broken?

Don't underestimate the power of practical effects.

no no, not super broken, like just not plugged in into a wall, and old looking. maybe like an old fashioned retro one. the screen wont be visible, just the picture in it.

From what it sounds like, you might consider exactly what mikko stated.

Film what you want to have on the screen, toss it on a DVD, and play it on the TV. It might make your life a lot easier than doing it digitally. Unless of course you are planning on having the TV move? Meaning you can't plug it in.

But you lost me on the screen not visible part. You run into a problem doing it digitally of it looking too...perfect? I guess. You would need to go in an edit the footage so it looks natural. If that makes any sense.

Assuming you have a moving camera the best application by far for this task is MONET by Imagineer Systems. It's amazing. If you know any VFX guys they may have it and it really makes it easy to replace a screen on even difficult hand-held shots.

If you're not moving the camera, then you can simply do a "corner pin." Then set up a mask so that it's in the shape of the monitor (bulged slightly on the top and bottom) and you should be good to go.

I did this exact same thing with a TV for my music video -- http://www.youtube.com/winkkeziah

Only we took it a step further, and had the image actually come up off the TV and fill the screen, transitioning from B&W to color. It was very challenging!

Best bet for you is probably to display the actual clip on the monitor. You can easily make the monitor LOOK like it's unplugged. Just let the power and data cables run down from the back of the monitor. These cables will actually be plugged into A/C and PC -- but you'll have a 2nd set of matching cables. Let the plug ends of those cables run up into the frame so they can be seen -- looking like they are the same cables that run out of the frame. The audience will assume they're the same cables -- and that the monitor is unplugged.

You may want to find a way to kill the power lamp on the monitor -- further enhancing the idea that it's not a working monitor.

This will be far less headache than trying to achieve the same effect in post -- especially if you want any kind of camera movement at all.

Good luck!

Plug it in, set it up, then drap the plug end of a different power cord where it can be seen. You see the plug not in the wall outlet, you assume the monitor isn't plugged in. You just won't get as clean an image as if you composite on in. Just be careful, those screens aren't squared, but rounded.

i thought of that, hmmmmm. well, i might have to change location, because the current one doesn't have power close to it.

i might be able to get a generator though...hmmmmmmmmmmm

For this little vfx short I made a tv that was off play all of these videos. Just used AE to composite them :).
