Advertising - It's all in your head

Saw this article in Ad Age today, and thought it was fairly interesting.
(not to mention damned creepy)

Hear Voices? It May Be an Ad
An A&E Billboard 'Whispers' a Spooky Message Audible Only in Your Head in Push to Promote Its New 'Paranormal' Program

Yeah, I had the same reaction you guys did, but the more I think about it, the more I hear that little voice in the back of my head saying "its completely normal, this is a good idea" over and over.... hey.... wait a minute...

:)

What' funny is my wife and I spend alot of time marveling about how advertisers find new places every year to cram another ad -
I figured they'd eventually run out of space....never crossed my mind they'd put them directly in my head.
ugh

Loking for uses of this technology in our field I came across good idea. you know, when one of the actors is doing someting wrong and you can't tell him because you would ruin the pricier or most important take of the production it would realy come in handy.
you could communicate with the actors during filming without the directors voice being caught by the mic.

I remember reading an article about technology similar to this a long time ago - essentially hyper directional speakers. At the time they were pushing them for places like night clubs - you could have the music as loud as you want without it bleeding out into the street, etc. Going a step further, there was mention of having multiple dancefloors within the same club - each one playing a different style of music, and you would only be able to hear whichever one is aimed at the dancefloor you're on at the time.

No question - technology like this has some great potential... but of course it has alot of downsides as well...like invasive advertising.
I can't help but think - at what point will the line be drawn? I mean forcing ads into people heads seems like it might be going a bit far.
I suppose you could argue its no different than radio... but it just seems so wrong.

but half the fun of being the director is being able to scream and yell at everyone.

i hate advertisements. this is a terrible idea, just like the cookie-scented billboards they were putting in bus shelters a couple months ago. we're getting bombarded by visual stimuli all the time now and everybody's already got ADD, now they're going after our other senses, too. it's just too much.
