CompUSA is shutting down

This sucks for those of us up in Alaska. We've got Compusa and BestBuy. Not anything close to a Frys' or anything else.

And Best Buy has way worse prices and selection on computer stuff up here.

i used to work there, good riddance. anyone whos been in their stores recently would tell ya its a mess and horribly stocked. the oldest games displayed as new games, nothing new in stock at all, and tv's next to macs next to pc's next to whatever, just out of touch and no clue. probably a bunch of people just cashing checks and phoning it in. cant blame em, but its not going to last forever if thats your work force.

i could have turned that place around i bet, idea wise, but im in touch, know what people want, etc...

Okay so can you get some good fire sale gear at the stores that are getting ready to close?

The Comp USA near me went out of business several months ago. They were pretty stingy right up until the end, never saw any great fire sale deals.

EDIT: My best CompUSA purchase was an impulse buy at the checkout: "Dirty Work" and "Straw Dogs" on DVD. $5 each.

That guy rules.

I am still waiting for the "OFFICE DEPOT TO CLOSE" announcement. Every time I go to one, its like a ghost town...3 cars in the parking lot...more employees than customers....I don't get it. How do they stay in business...?

Oh and Radio Shack. What do they sell anyway? Batteries? WTF?

I cannot tell you how many times I have been on a shoot and needed an adapter/cable/widget and Radio Shack saved me. Where else can you get a composite to BNC adapter in a small town? I hope they never go out of business.

Well, judging by the commercials and radio ads they continue to churn out, I don't think you have to worry.

Right there with you as well....
I just wish they'd quit asking for my social security number and my first born when all I want to do is pick up a watch battery.

Not at the Radio Shack I went to when I was in that exact same situation (and in not such a small town). :)

Never been to a CompUSA, but if they can't compete with Best Buy, yikes... The local Best Buy never, ever has anything in stock that I'm looking for.

I'm not sure that their problem is competing with Best Buy store against store but more of a management problem. Best Buy has fairly basic computer/peripheral solutions, while CompUSA has had a deeper level of computer/peripheral solutions.

As far as cables and connectors go, I agree that Radio Shack can be a life saver when you need something RIGHT NOW. I've also gotten cables at Guitar Center.
