hi everyone,

just a quick question, i am filming a panto tomorro which contains a section which is all lit by UV light to make fish puppets glow, what is the best way for me to capture this on the hvx?

i have a uv filter, will that take away the glow effect?

and finally does filming uv light without a filter damage the camera in any way?

thanks people,

cheers

I would say that it's just a lighting effect and I'd say you should be cool with the UV or with Naked Lens. UV is just a higher spectrum of sunlight, I believe. I'd say you should experiment with ND and polorizer and maybe a haze too.. just to see what it's like.

cheers

The way UV fluorescence works is that UV light is invisible ot the eye,
but it makes objects glow in the visible spectrum. So you are basically
just trying to capture visible light. There are two possible problems:
1. The camera is sensitive to UV light, which might mess up the
fluorescence (the same way UV sky light can add haze to a visible shot).
The solution is to use your UV filter, so you just get visible light.
BTW, the UV light wouldn't damage the camera.
2. The other problem is light level. As we all know, 1/3" chip cameras
don't do so well under low light conditions, so you'll want to maybe use
extra UV lighting to get levels that give you good visible levels.

Tell us how it worked out!

Stuckfootage has it right. Personally I love the look of blacklights on the HVX. It's almost what the eye sees, except more blue. I think someday I'll use blacklights on set just for effect, it looks really amazing.
The glowing effect is fluorescence, that shouldn't be affected by the UV filter, since the wavelength has dropped into the visible spectrum. Check out the Wikipedia article on fluorescence if you're looking for an explanation.
