not sure if im doing anything wrong in terms of settings and stuff, but the image im getting back though my P2 viewer on "full screen" mode looks rather noisy. Definately not the amazing quality Ive seen on this site from other users. The picture, like I said, is quite noisy on full screen.

Is this a compression thing?

All footage was shot in 720PN Cinelike D. Outdoors. Daytime.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Hook the camera up to a HDTV and play it back. Bet it looks worlds better.

On my Mac playing footage back in QuickTime would make you want to cry. But play it on a HD screen and it looks incredible.

Im playing it back through the P2 Viewer, fullscreen. I dont know what format that is....but yea, not a decent picture, kinda looks like youtube quality

Why would other users footage look amazing on the same screen

Excuse my ignorance :)

I will check the footage though an HD screen...

To my knowledge, P2 viewer will not give you a full quality preview. Use your NLE, or play out of your camera via component to an HDTV as n8ture suggested.

Also, Cine D is the noisiest of the curves.

D.

V (I find) to be a good compromise. That is my usual curve of choice, or Cine D. It is one of the noisier curves though too.

My gain was off. Ive seen footage shot on Cine D that looked amazing. Ill keep experimenting :)

And Ill try playing back in HD.

Some dude just posted footage in the Screen Grabs section...check it out. It's called "lvga". this is the footage quality one dreams of.

How did he acheive such quality

If you could post a short clip or a series of stills it might be easier to get to the bottom of the cause (if there even is a problem, that is)

P2 viewer is NOT OPTIMIZED FOR QUALITY. It's optimized for speed. P2 viewer's playback quality isn't all that good.

First, you have to go into the menu settings and make sure that you tell it to use full resolution; by default I think it's set to half-res.

Second, you're going to see tons more macroblocking and noise from P2 Viewer, because it doesn't properly implement the full DVCPRO-HD codec. instead it relies on the MPEG coefficient decoder acceleration hardware provided in graphics cards. The MPEG coefficients are not the same as DVCPRO-HD, but they're "close enough" for preview, and it's very fast to use the graphics card, so they do. But the end result is grainy noisy footage displayed on the laptop screen.

Properly displayed from an NLE will look much better than P2 Viewer will display.

Ill try and post some footage. I just went over it again. Dont get me wrong, the footage looks real good. Just noisy around the edges in some sequences. When played on the smaller p2 screen, the quality is perfect!!!!

Barry:

Thank you! I changed the P2 viewer setting to "full rez"....

The images are AMAZING!!!

Im very happy right now :D

I find the best quality is when I play the footage back on my 1982 cathode ray TV with the old channel changing knobs on the TV. Looks amazing, like Afghanistan footage. ;)

Herzogisgod,

You might also want to look at the scene files exchange sticky on the top of this forum, as well as Barry's scene files settings on the book. They should give you different looks and noise performance.
