2007 Toronto 24 HR Film Challenge

Thanks Jeff - yeah I'm pretty happy with the way the movie turned out. I could have gotten better shots, but we were a little pressed for time so I fired off a few quick ones just to have something for BTS.

I thought it was pretty entertaining.

You guys crossed the line a couple of times but it was only distracting the first time.

The audio was also hit-or-miss, but aside from that and a few other technical problems I was actually entertained. Good work.

Story was a little cliche but I laughed a few times. That cough was good too.

Good work for 24 hours.

Haha thanks, yeah the audio was mostly my fault - I boomed only because we didn't have a specialized audio guy and I'm not the greatest at booming. If you thought OUR story was cliche, you shoulda seen the films that were shown tonight.

Everything was about first dates, first kisses and most, if not all were drug induced spazz outs in terms of the cinematography. In comparison to the other films, ours was "tame" and didn't cross the line as much as we thought. There was a scene in one of the movies, that was flat out straddling, while half naked.

Thanks for the critique, but in my honest opinion in comparison to the other 25 films, I think we did a decent job. Funny thing is, I never like the movies I work on for these 24/48 hour film challenges.

Hey bballplaya, when did we cross the line? I'm just learning what this really means, so I didn't pay much attention to it. Thanks

Ah, unless he meant the 180 degree line in which case, I was WAY too tired last night to be posting anything. Sorry bballplaya haha.

EDIT: The more I think about, you're right...we did. Guess we just gotta tighten up the reigns for the next movie. Good eye catching that.

It happens first at 20-25.

Goes from over-the-shoulder on the left shoulder to a shot where the camera is to the right of the same guy.

The first time I saw it, I didn't know where I was (in the scene) for about 2 seconds.

It's harder to spot once you've shot it and you're watching yourself, because you know exactly where the space is, but to the audience, we're just discovering how the room looks, one shot at a time.

1:55-2:10 consists of constant crossing the line. See how that disorients the viewer?

I recommend Hollywood Camera Work. Two watches through (I recommend possibly taking notes), and you'll have the composition knowledge of a professional. Also, don't DL these off the net. We want a #2.

Not bad. Things were definitely uncomfortable during the exam, so that was good. When he was told to sit back down and wait a little longer it would have been nice to have a shot of a clock or something to help the transition.

Considering the time you had to pull this off it was pretty good.
The audio could have used a bit of work though.

A few more shot angles as well.

Pretty good though.

Cheers,

Mike

That video was great! Was that greenscreened when he dispeared?

They most-likely shot the scene twice and used a matte to split the frame in two. Then just composited in the smoke thing.

If you want details on how to do this, let me know.

Ya, i've done some effects like that, i was just wondering cause i thought i saw camera movement, making it tricker to do the same shot twice.

And, you want a #2? Huh? lol

I loved it. Could have a quicker pace with some edits, but I think you nailed a really funny little film. Nice work!

The movement comes after the effect takes place.

Shot one: Jack black on the right side of the frame talking, then snapping, as both actors react.

Shot two: Actors stand in same place and pretend to react to Jack Black snapping. During this shot, once it has started, all the movement you want can take place.
