A friend of mine has just finished putting together a site specifically for the Steadicam Merlin. It also focuses on the older JR, and the other lighter Steadicam rigs like the Pilot: www.MerlinResource.com

The site has links to all the manuals, etc, and will have product reviews, news, etc..

There's a discussion forum set up for everything lightweight Steadicam related.
There are a couple of Merlin & JR experts already signed up and ready to help with everything from basic balancing to complex shot planning.

The site also features photo and video galleries to compare sets ups / balancing configurations / etc... and of course to post & watch resulting shots!

Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown is also involved with the site, as both a member on the forum there, and as a contributor of articles and information to the main site.

The site is privately owned and run (not under the direction of Steadicam/Tiffen), but it provides for direct communication between users and the designers, manufacture, etc...
It's basically a highly interactive extension to the "Merlin Cookbook" offered by Steadicam.

I'll also be over there taking part as I do here of course.

Got my merlin today, and registered with this resource - great stuff.

One thing that perplexed my is how do I know if my new merlin comes with the new metal gimble? I thought it was an optional extra (or an upgrade with the vest/arm kit) - but according to that website the news mentions the gimble comes as standard.

How would I know?

thanks.

How many weights are in the kit?

Is the "ring" of the gimbal (not the guide ring, but actually the moving part) plastic?

From memory (I don't have it here this moment) 2 starts, 1 finish and 6 mids.

Will check the ring.

(there was no tripod plate with it if that's a clue - a feature of the old set I believe - but there was a voucher for a free plate)

Also, is it normal for the unit to get move around even when it's all set up?
(HVX+5600 battery)

yeah, it will float around just a little .. though, as frustrating as it is, that's probabaly you moving it!

Once you learn the fine points of balance and oeprating, you'll have it fully udner control :)
