16:9 SD displaying letterboxed on widescreen TV

I'm sure this is a total newbie question, so please excuse me. I'm just learning.

We've been shooting with a Sony FX7 at 1080i. For the purposes of getting video onto a regular DVD, we've been capturing at SD 16:9, editing and then burning that on a DVD.

But when the movie plays on a widescreen TV, its not taking up the whole screen. It's still letter boxed and looks smushed. I've double checked the settings and it's going onto the DVD as 16:9.

Do I have a setting wrong for burning the DVD or is there something I need to do differently on the video?

Best,

Rob

I assume its a HDTV you would then need to play your sd dvd on an upconverting dvd player through HDMI. That will then display the dvd in its native format.

Check your DVD player's settings. ... make sure the player knows it's a 16:9 TV.

Sounds like the player thinks it's sending to a 4:3 TV and is therfore letterboxing it.

I'll check the DVD player when I get home, but other SD DVD's that have widescreen content display on the entire screen of the TV. So I assumed it was something I was doing wrong when burning the DVD.

This is an LCD HDTV.
