What is the the HVX (or any other video cam) equvailent to ISO settings on a normal SLR camera called?

Its always a balance in photography between ISO, Shutter and aperture settings....

I guess I really never thought about how a video cam handles light and what the user needs to do to control it.

thanks for any replies!

Well, it is still all about your shutter and apature, but the cams base ASA/ISO doesn't change (outside of some gamma adjustments).

I believe the HVX is rated at ASA 320, and the DVX is ASA 640.

You can think of changing film speed as changing gain levels. If you boost gain by 6dB, you're adding a stop but compromising with noise (grain). Each camera's noise properties will be different, but adding gain will always increase noise. Noise is more noticable in moving pictures, because of the nature of the medium.

You have to think about these things in abstract ways if you're going to parallel them to still film shooting, since you've got a different sensor size and ISO isn't an ideal way to compare exposures between film and video.
