How much should I be getting paid ?

how many days did you work on it?

basically you would take the sum of your...

daily rate
daily equipment rental (your cam, your edit bay)
expendables (tape stock, gaffer tape, etc)

that's a minimum. when i bid on a project i also expect an additional 40% profit margin.

Yeah, this forum needs to show some standards for professional paid work so people stop working for dirt cheap.

these are my rates for something like this, for which i always submit a pitch and budget proposal beforehand...

$650/day for me
$450/day for bay rental
actual cost of camera and grip gear rentals

yeah because I feel like am doing to much work.
However they want to shoot another day,and am going to charge them
$425 for that day. so this job is looking like it turning into $1,275
this will be the last music video I do for under 1,500 !!!

Wow, you guys get paid hardcore. So with a DVX100b w/ SGpro 1 day shoot, 1 day edit I could be making close to $1000?

Absolutely.
As long as your work is solid.
At the end of the day something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
That said - one of the worse things you can do is underprice yourself.

A friend of mine once told me (and I've lived by this ever since), if everyone you talk to hires you then you aren't charging enough.

I was just having a conversation with someone today with a similar topic. The question I have is, "Why is it that people always think it's ok to offer so little money for someone to create them a music video, whether it's animated or video? Do they not understand it is work?"

Everywhere I go I hear this same problem over and over again. It's almost an insult for someone to say I will pay you $100 dollars to make me a music video. It will be great exposure for you!

When does it stop becoming "great" exposure?
(This doesn't apply to me because I am new to it all), but it's a waste because you wouldn't go to Walmart and say I will give you 100 dollars for that computer over there and for selling it to me this cheap I will tell everyone that comes into my home how great John Doe is for selling me this computer for $100!!!

it's fine to undercharge maybe for the first few projects you work on (if this was your first music video or wedding or whatever) but if you have been doing it and have some great skills then NEVER cut yourself short.
