Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

Lets say Hydra does go through by way of a miracle, would anyone have any confidence in sending in a $5k camera to a company that doesn't respond to anyone?

Just take a look at Andromeda footage. I bet people will be more than willing to send in their cameras.

I'm done dreaming for Hydra unless a miracle happens. Now I'll have to order a red. It's the only other camera I'd look at anyways.

I had enough of panasonic and sony. seriously, thats what they want...for us to play catchup while they offer this and that feature. i'm sick this ****, my next plunge was gonna be the HYDRA or the RED. I and others know the game too well with the large corporations who choose to block this and that feature unless we pay for the next update. screw this. next upgrade for me is either uncompressed 2k or 4k or nothin. i fed the lion too much already

cardmaverick,

Things have changed, they didn't treat potential customers like this when they were selling the Andromeda mod. I'm not saying it will stop people but it would be an issue of importance to me if by chance Hydra does go through. Maybe a performance bond or something along those lines will give people like us the confidence that Jaun or the potential new owner doesn't go away again for 2 months with my $5k camera stuck in his shop or at least if they do I know I'll be covered by a performance bond or some kind of insurance. The Andromeda footage is amazing.

I can understand if a company is keeping the suspense by doing this, actually that would be smart marketing, but if a company cant tell its potential customers whats going on they'll lose credibility, or at least the next time that person starts another company, users will be skeptical about him/her, especially when the user has dealt with that person before under another company.

dont let the people down

It is just the end of the holiday weekend, so he may not have had a chance to see and respond to that post yet.

That said, there is weirdness on both sides about this to me. One is that guy joining and posting out of nowhere.

The other is Juan's lack of presence both on this forum and his own over the last month...

Other's as well, but it's all speculation... this is weird to say the least... and disappointing to say the least.

Personally I think Hydra mod would be a good selling point for Panasonic if it were out there in the market. Gives people another reason to own the cam... Speculating... could be a reason for another company to buy it and squash it (which does and has happened. Some guy made a washer that didn't require detergent. Used vibrations or something [don't remember now]. A detergent company bought it for millions of dollars so it would never see the light of day. He is apparently now working on a dishwasher version but won't be selling it).

Could also be a good reason why Panasonic might want to buy it, so it doesn't find it's way (at least not anytime soon) into competing brands cameras. Keep it a Panasonic thing..... Then again, it could all be completely kaka.... who knows.

For the record, 5 pages back when I said it would be coming out barring any really crazy things happening, I had absolutely no idea that this was coming... But, there's the crazy thing (potentially) happening for ya'.

Business is business yes... But, I do have to disagree with Luis a bit. If Juan had knowingly sold his technology to a company that was going to squash it... it does certainly say something on his end.

Later,
Jason

I wouldn't want to take your HVX from you. There is NO reasonable reason why Juan isn't coming out with an announcement of some sort. Even if he is considering selling the company, or has done so, a simple email to this site and a post on his forum saying, "Please stand by for an exciting announcement," or "Please be patient, things are currently brewing," or something similar is certainly in order.

Anyone who thinks that this grand silence is "good business" doesn't know much about transacting business with professionals. I've been a business professional. I'm a business professor (finance and economics). This type of silence is devastating to reputations.

But, I guess we'll find out someday. On the other hand, I won't be a bit surprised if what we find out is just silence on the other end of the line. I was really pumped about Hydra, and was prepared to mod two HVXs for an upcoming film. Unfortunately, I think it isn't going to happen.

I dont wanna sound negative, but i do wish that reel stream never announced this to begin with, the hard part is not only being able to tap into the HYDRA system, but the saddest is not even getting any news at all.:violin:

You aren't disagreeing with me at all on that.
My point was (though not very articulately stated) that I seriously doubt any company is going to offer to buy a company and be completely open about the fact that they plan to squash it once the sale goes through. If someone were to buy it in order to 'squash it' it probably wouldn't be clear that was the intent until after the sale.

Point taken... Though if you had made a detergent-less washer, and a detergent company offered to buy it for 40 million dollars, something tells me you would get what their intentions probably were... Not saying at all that this is the case here. All speculation as that is all we can do. I don't *think* that Juan would knowingly do that, but I don't know him at all.... Just throwing it out there, since we're talking rumors right now anyways ;)

Well said, and also even their site being down - the reel-stream URL linking to the forums, and not the site itself.

Let's remind ourselves of EXACTLY what that strange message on the forums said:
My apologies for the late reply. The Andromeda/Hydra technology is being sold, and we won't be installing any new systems.

Cheers,
Juan
So far, all the conjecture in this thread has revolved around the premise that the sale is of Juans choosing, regardless of whether he was approached, or himself made the first move.

But - to think the unthinkable - what if it was not of his choosing? What if the company simply reached a state where its future was no longer viable? What if the sale amount was for a very small amount - a residual value for the business? The longer this "weirdness" persists, and the more time before any official announcement emerges, the more likely this scenario seems.

It also seems that "the technology" was in essence a (very clever) method of getting the most from a DVX100. That does not necessarily translate into a general methodology that can be applied to any other camera. Conceivably, what is now being witnessed is the realisation that it was not possible to apply it to the HVX. But there is a very easy way to prove me wrong...........

Wow! This was already the longest thread I had ever seen, now it's smokin'...

No manufacturer likes third parties cracking open their creations and modifying them, especially when the result proves that the icreation could be running significantly better than it currently is.
So is Juan maybe in some kind of sticky legal situation with Panasonic? A guy who kept so in touch with his client base before suddenly going totally, but TOTALLY silent says to me that guy is SCARED, and any big company has more than enough big guns to blow an operator like Reel-Stream right out of the water.
By the way, I tried emailing all the Reel-Stream staff about Andromeda in the last week and got nothing, zilch, so it seems clear something big and no doubt nasty is going on.

Juan is obviously a clever guy in the electronics area, but is he the only one in the world who is capable of doing this type of modification? In Europe maybe? Ireland anyone?

But that depends on your definition of "better". In terms of technical quality, then maybe so, but it comes at a complexity price, and if Panasonic had just put a Hydra on the market, the vast majority of people who bought the HVX would probably have just said "nice pictures, but too complicated". And would Hydra have ever worked anyway? There have NEVER been any screenshots to prove the claims made for it AFAIK.

Worth also remembering what was originally promised (at the end of March) for timescales: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=905663&postcount=101

We will be announcing release dates sometime after NAB, but the target release is during the second half of 2007, allowing for a couple months of beta testing after NAB. Things are moving a LOT quicker this time around, since we now have the experience from Andromeda.
We're now three quarters into the second half of 2007, and not only no release, but no proof of it's capabilities.

Conspiracy theories against big manufacterers are all very well, but not let's forget that a lot of companies simply go bust every week without any help from outside!

I admit I had my doubts about Hydra, but they were more in the nature of "will it deliver as promised?"
Never tought it would die altogether
I'm not in the league to consider Red, but the Hydra?, Yeah I could, and did consider it a viable option. Now...?

If you look back a year or so on Reel Stream's Andromeda forum, you'll see that Juan himself had reservations about applying the technology to the HVX. That being said, he eventually announced Hydra, from which I conclude that he had worked out the technical issues with the HVX. Juan claimed that Hydra could theoretically work on other cameras, but added that given their limitations (eg, the JVC HD100's lack of spatial offset), the full promise of Hydra -- greater color depth and spatial resolution -- wouldn't be realized. Because of his technical (if not economic) success with Andromeda, I have no reason to doubt him.

If indeed his company is being sold, there are a number of possible reasons why. But there are other reasons he might be silent, including illness (his or a loved one's). I don't know the answer. But seeing as how this thread is no longer serving any useful purpose, I suggest that it be closed, at least until Juan responds.

Because DVXUser honors its contracts. If reel-stream paid for an ad, then it will continue in rotation until Reel-stream tells DVXUser to pull it.

As for speculating on why Juan's silent, I think the best answer is that he's been told to be silent. There is no other valid explanation. Juan has always been very responsive. Therefore, any change is obviously not of his choice.

Let's take that statement at face value: "hydra's been sold and no further installations will be done." If that's the case, I have no doubt that he will continue to service existing customers, but there's little to no point in making announcements to future customers because there won't be any.

Still, it makes no sense to me as to why there hasn't been a general announcement to say "hydra's been sold and there will be no future installations". Unless perhaps the deal isn't done yet -- then it makes a lot of sense. If they're in a forced "quiet period" while the acquiring company does its "due diligence" then Juan would probably be unable to comment further publicly.

In any case, further speculation would seem to be a pointless expenditure of energy. I've sent Juan an e-mail asking for clarification. Sooner or later Juan will respond. He's the only one who can clear this up. Until he does, NOBODY in this thread is giving qualified accurate answers.

I'm not sure even that adds up though. If I was in the process of acquiring a company, my expectation would be very strongly "business as usual" in public on that companys part until matters were finalised. The very last things I would want would be such as taking down the website and redirecting to forums, and complete silence in response to routine enquiries.

What we are seeing is speculation following complete silence on their part - not silence following speculation. Very, very different scenarios.
