NFL 2007-2008 Thread

Broncos do look decent, and in first. Seahawks lead their pathetic division too. The West in both conferences is very sad these days.

Oddly, if you look at the Broncos and Seahawks schedules, both could conceivably run the table and end up 12-4 and 11-5. It's not likely, but not out of the question either.

In 2004 both the Rams and Vikings were wildcards in the NFC with 8-8 records, and both teams won their first round playoff games. The Rams with an impressive last minute win over Seattle, and the Vikings beat the Packers in Green Bay.

Weak regular season records don't always reflect how a team is playing at crunch time either. Last year the Seahawks won their division at 9-7, then after lucking it out in their first playoff game against the Cowboys, they almost beat the Bears who went onto the Superbowl. There were actually some bad calls on both teams in that game, but it's unlikely Seattle would have won and gone to the Superbowl, (but no where near as bad of officiating as Superbowl XL which cost Seattle a chance at winning - worst officiating in a big game ever).

Yeah, one of my friends is a big Seahawks fan and remember watching that Superbowl with him, he was super pissed and rightfully so, that was one of the worst called games I've seen, right up there with this years Pats Vs Colts game. That was the "Jerome Bettis" year, so maybe thats why.

Last weeks picks - 12 for 16 - 75%, a lot better than last week.

Your friend was right to be so upset. There were numerous articles written on the bad calls, and it even has it's own Wikipedia entry - that's separate from the entry on the game itself! That's how bad the officiating was. It was almost like the NFL and "America" wanted the Steelers and Bettis and Cower to finally get the one for the thumb and the officials made sure that some obscure team from the dark and dreary Northwest where no one can find on a map was going to win.

What were the calls in the Pats-Colts game? I remember a few being phantom calls when they needed to let the teams play, but I don't remember it costing the Colts the game. Let's hope the Colts heal though, and these two teams meet again in the AFC championship.

It hurt the Pats if anything. 146 yards in penalties, which was a franchise record. The pass interference calls were ridiculous, 50 yard penalty (Hobbs) on a play that was about as by the book as it could be, offensive pass interfernce on Moss, when all he was doing was going up to catch the ball, personal fouls, it went on and on. For a game that was hyped to be the game of the decade they sure did a good job to make it as lopsided as possible in the first three quarters, had it not been for the Pats D and holding the Colts to 6 points in 3 red zone tries (which the Colts got their from the pass interference calls), The Pats probably wouldn't have won that game. They called a fair game for the one quarter (4th).

Now that you mention it, I do remember all that. I guess I forgot because the Pats won. But you are right, the calls against Moss, and especially Hobbs were absurd. That was indeed a terrible called game.

Was this the same crew that worked Superbowl XL?!

Games like these make you wonder, after NBA referee Tim Donaghy screwed the NBA and it's fans...

Be interesting if it was the same crew.

I heard over the weekend that an NFL ref became the first ref in 30 years to officiate the same team two weeks in a row, I think he was filling in for someone. Cool that the NFL does that though and doesn't have one ref on the same teams every week.

Yeah I know, you sometimes you just got to scratch your heard and wonder what they are calling. I realize being a ref is a tough job and plays are so bang bang that mistakes do happen but when something is blantly not a penalty and its called, the thought does come into your head that their trying to screw a team. Football is a bit different from other sports though, now with video reply and although it cannot be used on penalty calls refs can still conference together and pick up the flag and make the right call if someone else sees something (like what happened in Cleveland this week, couldn't technically review the field goal, conferenced together and made what turned out to be the right call). I saw non of that during that game. Anyways Pats still won so its all good.

Yeah, far and away they get the right call, in some very difficult situations. So refs are to be commended. But I agree, when in doubt don't make the call, because in big games when it really matters, making the wrong call, or a phantom call, really, truly stands out as bad and can lead to eternal speculation.

Some upsets today, if not major ones, and the Patriots finally did not look invincible.

Good, hard fought wins for the Vikings, Jaguars, 49ers, Bears, and Raiders. Nice comeback and hold for the win by the Seahawks. They, and the Chargers are starting to look like their old selves.

Kurt Warner threw for nearly 500 yards against the 49ers, and reminded me of the guy that took the Rams to the Superbowl twice (winning 1), but that fumble in OT erased all that. The o-line broke down twice on him when he needed them most.

Why were they kicking to Hester? I couldn't believe they second time they did it, unbelievable. Great comeback by the Bears though.

The Pats didn't look sharp last night, great game played by the Eagles, they had me worried there for most of the game. Very interesting to see the Pats offense start in a four wide receiver set and use that for the first half and only run one running play the entire time. Thought it was kinda odd that the Ealges offense was throwing in the middle of the field the entire game and moving the ball significantly and then abandon that and start throwing the ball outside towards the end and what may have cost them the game. Great game by Asante Samuel. I think in the long run this game will be very beneficial for the Pats. Something they can work off of. Theres really only been two games where the Pats were challenged all the way into the fourth quarter.

That was a tough loss for Bronco fans, because your team started to look pretty decent last week, like they could take the division and move into the Cutler era. Instead, a step back, and it was San Diego who looks like the team they were last year and apt to take the division.

I agree with JC that this near loss by the Patriots will help them in the end.
