Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

While I am sorry to think that Hydra won't come out, I'm also reasonably convinced (per the above discussion) that Hydra isn't going to really lead to dramatically better HVX footage.

I just cut a new demo reel using mostly Andromeda footage, but I still have a few stock HVX clips that involved massive lighting setups, so I wanted to include them in it. They are no where near the Andromeda quality. I'm sure that Hydra will look much better than stock HVX... in the right hands.

You don't need to use the magenta filtering either, its more like "icing on the cake" if you want the cameras absolute best, especially when shooting exterior footage.

Look, I definitely want to buy this system. . . if it comes out in time, I'll be one of the first to use it on a feature film. But I can't do the mod myself. I'm just going to have to wait for some final word, but I don't like the silence. How much time would it take to say, "Hey, it's still alive and it's looking great!"? Or, worse, "Hey, guys, it's not looking like Hydra is going to come out."?

Say what you will about RED, at least they have a very open information policy. Granted, I wish my RED # was a lot lower, but such is life.

Alas. . .

I think Juan is just plain old busy. Most people don't seem to know this, but he's not just working on Hydra, he's also working on a huge new version of Sculptor HD, and he also has a firmware update for Andromeda that turns it into a 12 bit linear system. Thats a lot for such a small team.

hey cardmaverik, its cool and all that juan is a busy dude, and we all appreciate that, but from a business point of view, its also cool if a couple of words like "still working" are mentioned. even better, a teaser clip that will make all flip!

hey i just rhymed....

But, also keep in mind that this product was pre-announced long before it's actual anticipated release date.

This is good in that Juan has since incorporated some of the suggestions from this very thread, and it allows us the potential future end user a bit of an inside look and input into the final product.

But, bad (from his end) in that it makes everyone impatient :)
From what I have heard about Juan, and from what I have heard about the Andromeda, I'm expecting that this will be quite the product when it does come to market, and that it will be coming to market for sure (barring any crazy things happening).
Later,
Jason

I look forward to getting my hands on my own Hydra system. I want to really look into a new Cam (EX-1) because of the very apparent resolution leap over the HVX... but I just can't seem to part with the Pana.

I think that Hydra would sate my hunger for a little more and be less taxing than selling the HVX and getting an EX-1. Or heck, even an XH-A1 despite it's tape-based workflow.

Come oooon Hydra.

So, was a definitive price point ever reached on this? For those of us that don't yet have an HVX, but would be interested in purchasing the Hydra mod when it comes out (and I know we haven't heard from Juan yet, but is "late 2007" still a reasonable expectation?), are we really looking at a $9–10k set-up here? Would the premod be more or less pricey than buying both components individually?

The reason I ask is because, though my "camera fund" is more or less depleted at the moment, I would like to know how much I should be looking to save up, and in what time frame relative to its release. I realize these questions may be unanswerable given the amount of information currently available, but with December fast-approaching, they've begun to plague my mind yet again, so I thought I'd throw them out there just in case there were any new developments I may have missed since Summer.

I record things.............me too...just kiddin

you will need an HVX obviously, roughly between 4-6k for the camera (depends if new or used) then the HYDRA mod is about $3500 the last time someone mentioned....so you can get a full 2kres system at 4:4:4 sampling and an estimated 10-13 stops (hopefully) at under $8000. There are no 2k cameras for that price, the closest is the silicon imaging si-2, but thats about 13-15000 for the mini. do the math.

when will the HYDRA come out? someone mentioned at the end of 2007, hey wait, thats soon, crossing fingers.

hope this helps

Dude, that blows big time!!
I wonder if the buyer of the technology is going to continue the development and if they do will they raise the prices on the mods.

WOW.
Its going to be interesting to see what happens now.

Well - congrats to Juan and his crew.
Hopefully their years of work on this paid off handsomely.

Hmmmm
I wonder who they sold it to?

I would not be surprised if Hydra and Andromeda has been bought by Panasonic or one of the larger camera manufacturers.
Whoever has bought it either wants the technology for a future camera or to protect their current products.

I hope that they havent sold it to Panasonic or a manufacture. If they have then it will never see the light of day. This would greatly change my opinion of Juan and his company. :(
