affordable Mic for interior shooting

RE: Affordable mic for indoors

Why don't you check out the Oktava MK012 (about $240) with a hyper cap, the AT4073a (about $550) is a shotgun, and has a long distance pickup, and will work but pick up any sound bouncing of hard surfaces towards the mic.

The Oktava MK012 is a small diaphragm condenser microphone and probably better suited to indoor shooting.

Maybe he meant the AT4053 hyper, which is $400. I've never heard a comparison between this and the Oktava, but most people here are happy with the Oktava.

I would recommend checking out the Sound Room.

Yesterday they began offering a coupon for DVXusers only that's good through the end of the year.

At checkout just enter the coupon code "DVXUSER" and you will receive 10% off your entire order.

That's pretty damn good considering their prices are great to begin with!

You can find them on the web here:

hmm...now im a bit confused :(

I was going to go with the 4043a...good choice?

There is no 4043a. There's the 4073a, which is a shotgun, and the 4053a, which is a hyper. Shotguns generally aren't advised for filming indoors. If you're filming interiors, you want a hyper. The cheapest recommended hyper is the Oktava MK012.

I like shotguns for outside, or where ever I want to isolate off axis sound. The Oktava is a really good sounding mic for inside work and better for getting thick tone, but the shotgun will cover you for both inside & out. If you have the cash get both. I always use my MK102 inside over a shotgun for interiors because, to my ears, cardiod condesors have a richer tone.

PS, keep the mic in the same realative position for each set up in a location, otherwise your sound (actors voices) will seem to jump around ( the mic sounds close....oh, now it sounds far away, hey!....this really creative, or really bad technique) within the same scene when cut together. The distance from speakers lips and reflective walls need to be considered.----you already know this.

the Oktava reviews Ive read werent the best. And mostly it equates this mic with music recording...

Package #8 in the Sticky on this forum mentions the Audio Technia 4043a as part of a professional starter package. Whether or not this was a typo, I dont know. But the colum does reference an audio Technica for $500
