New bigger FireStore FS-100 available at 160GB

It would be nice if the older model could be upgraded to 160gb. Having bought the original, I don't really feel like shelling out an additional $2,495.

with 16 and 32 gig p2 cards here and coming, i guess focus figured they better do something to up their value...

I never understood why we are not able to swap in and out hardrives on this to give us never ending space. Do they use specially designed hard-drives?

Also, with Focus still making new products despite increasing P2 card sizes would Spec-Comm been able to still move forward with the Cineporter?

hey mjjason,
As far as I know, the CinePorter is DEAD. :(

Abaddon,
I'm making a mod to the FS-100 which I call the FS-Forever. and it will have swappable drives so you can record for ever. I can take your existing FS-100 and I can modify it so that you can swap out as many drives as you want.
Pooouuuufffff!!! wish granted. hahahahah
I'm about 1 week before I launch it on my site. and then I'll start taking pre orders.

Stunning how much of a premium they charge for what?.... an extra 100GB of disk space i.e. they swapped the drive out and added like $50 to THEIR costs! :(

Indy....

I emailed Focus and asked them if they were doing hd updates, but haven't had a reply in 48 hours. Guess they won't be keen on the idea!

Anyway looking forward to the FS-forever mod when it's available.

OK I got a reply from Focus this morning and they are not prepared to do any upgrades on 100 GB firestores to 160 GB.

Not that I was going to use them anyway, as I am more interested in the hot swappable fs-forever that Siniarch is going to be offering shortly. 160 GB might still be not enough on its own for wedding videographers, so the 100GB with the firestore and an extra 250GB to swap in will give enough space to shoot to my hearts content.

With The Carrion launching, plus the FS-Forever, Siniarch might have to consider some staff!

Hi Guys,

I hear you when it comes to Focus and no upgrade path, but I think the way they are looking at it is that they have probably spend thousands of dollars to develop their upgraded firmware which allows for bigger hard drives, so now they want to cash in on it. (though they probably should have had all those features from the get go)

Believe me, this company is much better at business than myself, and that is why they have stayed in business for so long. As for me, it would be nice to have a staff so that I could concentrate either on new products or on filming. both of which I want to do more than taking care of orders, but until that happens, I will be in charger of each individual order. :) or should I say :(
hahahahha

thanks guys for waiting and for your interest.

Sincerely,

Luis

Sad -- they are showing complete contempt for their customers.

I guess I don't agree with you.

Complete contempt?

It may well be that the process isn't as simple as HDD exchange, and could be cost prohibitive.

But Focus has updated the FS-100 with low cost firmware to expand its capabilities since it was introduced.

I don't think that squares with "complete contempt."

They already service their DTE recorders when something breaks, and that includes replacing the drives. Working with a 160GB hard drive isn't conceptually different than working with a 100GB drive, the firmware is upgradeable, and 99% of the code doesn't have to change.

The only reason why they may not be able to upgrade existing units would be a change from PATA to SATA. Most of the new, higher-capcity drives are SATA, so it would make sense for them to eventually rev the hardware.

I just bought one from B&H and the one i received does not have 160 GB of memory. I called B&H and complained that it only gets 100 GB of memory, even though the B&H site, and Focus claims it does. A rep at B&H told me that Focus does not sell Firestore units with 160 GB - even though B&H website and my packing slip clearly states 160 GB. B&H has sent an RA for the item, but i want a 160 GB firestore as advertised. Has anyone purchased one yet?

Okay, problem solved. The Firestore 100-160 is Partitioned into two halves one that is 100 gigs and the 2nd is 60 gigs. The problem is when you record on the device or turn it on (an empty firestore) - it will immediately read 112 minutes and count down all the way to 0 minutes, until the partitioned drive is filled. Then the 2nd/slave drive will kick in and start a new time (i assume 60 minutes or so and count down). There is no way from the manual that it mentions a partition and the manual displays that the read shows a 168 minutes when turning it initially on etc. Which is not correct.

It wasn't until i was able to speak to someone at Focus to be able to figure it out. When i hooked it up to a computer the first time (i didn't notice the partioned drives - probably because i have 15 partitioned drives already on my system already)

I will let you know how it handles after my weekend shoot. But if you order one and go hey this only gets 112 (or 111 minutes etc.) it is because the Firestore is partitioned and only displays the information regarding each individual partioned drive.

Oh and the price at B&H and alot of other places is 2099.99 (which is 400 dollars cheaper than originally listed) not bad for something that records 2.7 hours of 1080/60 footage.

Omar
