Extreme Bokeh stills

David,

I don't mind you being picky as I am myself, but I still don't have a clear explanation of what you mean by "Light Smear."

Lenny

check Philip's still and you see it here:

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=106882

Even Tim Tyler"s still have problem with highlighted areas here:

So the Letus Extreme being light sensitivity is nice but it shows of problems like we are seeing here. So this means that scenes with bright highlights aren´t working that well. And If I have to stop down, until my highlights don´t show a glow anymore, do you think this is a solution?

It's a trade off, David. Nice bokeh, you lose some light. Not so good bokeh, you get great low light performance.

Why can't we have both? or even a better G.G solution. Even if the G.G loses 1 stop intead of 0.5 stop but you can use it in bright highlight areas without having glows or not so good Bokeh problems. I'm sure even then the Extreme is still light efficient at 1 stop. Instead of having to turn down to F4 and try to deal with the G.G patterns and Gain.

David it's nowhere nearly as bad as you are saying. I got no light smear at all in my filiming on Saturday and you wouldn't have to stop down anywhere near as far as f4.

Wait till you get it then tell us what you think. All your speculating is pointless until you have your own first hand experience with it.

Cheers Philip,

If you say that is is not as bad, it is good to hear that. because Steven said one should try to go down to F4 in another post to get good Bokeh. So That is why I wrote back about the question about stepping down to F4 with a vibrating adapter?

I'll have to wait till christams. I will put this to test as soon as I get mine.Even though I've order it in Sep. It kind of a christmas present for myself, don't want to have it till christmas.

BTW you are right about getting the Letus Extreme, I have enough of shooting upside down. It drives me crazy... That is one of the reasons that I ordered the Extreme in Sep. (after having gone through the Brevis, Go35pro, WDR35PRO, an a self build adapter). There are good and bad in every adapter. I'm just trying to add some good exprerience that I had with the other adapters to the Extreme so that the Extreme can be more extreme.

I still hope that they can solve the riser block problem so that I don't need to change my rail set. Or add marking to the Lens mount. I hope this will be all done before I recieve mine.

Anyway, this is slowing me down with my house renovations, I have to get back to it before my wifes comes back with a complain. ;)

Philip, I still hope that Dennis Wood will soon send you a flip Brevis unit. And that You could hook up with Wayne to test it out on a SGPRO REV3. (Flip image with the ability to handle high shutter speed ) I think that is the next combo that I will order... Maybe Timur can do the testing if he gets his hands on the Brevis Flip unit first. Because I know for sure he is dying to be able to shoot the right side up with his SGPRO

OK Thanks, At least I now see what you are talking about I think.
I'd like to see how another adapter handles the same shot though to see if this is really an adapter problem.

I am concerned by how highlights are handled, because in manycircumstances I seek them out with an adapter.

BOURNE ULTIMATUM used, in addition to cine glass, two modified mount Nikon zoom lenses. They were probably converted to PL mount. These Nikon's were fast enough, compact/light, and suited the run and gun nature of certain setups.

merci bokeh!

David, I want to say I admire the grace you showed in your response. It would have been very easy for you to be defensive but you explained your position well. The Le brothers are always trying to improve on things and maybe one day soon the Extreme will become what you want it to be. As has been suggested, wait and do your own tests and come to your own conclusions regarding the bokeh.

My advice about closing the lens to f4 was based on some very quick tests that were anything but scientific. Your mileage may vary.

Cheers Steven, Thank you for the kind words. I hope to have my turn to put up stills too.. You guys just have to wait till Christmas.

I am so glad that we all have been moving forward with this adpter thing. A few years ago, I would have never been about to do this kind shots with a video camera. Even my old 8mm is winning hands down to my DVX in term of DOF then.

I admire the Le brothers in thier ever going research. So is there a solution to the riser block yet? I really love my existing rail set. Can't bare to say good bye to them

I am totally with my fellow German name brother here. We need a riser block... about 2 cm would be enough for me. As of right now, I'd have a hard time mounting a matte box to the extreme.

You definitely do not have to stop down to F4, David. At 2.8 on my 1.4 lens I found the donut had vanished.

Likewise, at 3 on a 2.8 135mm Lens, I also found that the donut had vanished. I think using your lens wide open is the no-no, and that's not just for bokeh but for a vignette free image.

Just don't be like me and try to zoom out all far on the HVX... the entire side of it will be black. xD

And how!

I got something in the works...... HEHEHHEhehehehehehe.......
