Incase you've not noticed on the news (it hasn't got massive coverage) the WGA and AMPTP have been butting heads on various contract issues of late, and a strike is to go ahead this Monday, 5th Nov, 2007.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO THE WRITER ON THIS BOARD?
No material would be read by any WGA-sig Studio/Company, or likely, any agent. I would imagine managers would still seek out new talent. but for mostly all of us, it seems highly likely that Hollywood is likely to be put on lock-down until these issues are resolved. In simple terms, NO BUYING OR READING OF SPECS BY WGA-SIG COMPANIES.
Obviously Non-Sig companies and such aren't going to be affected by this outcome, but anyone who chases material up the pole to the WGA-sig studios will see doors closed everywhere they look.
it's also imporant to know that if you do sell a spec or get work in this time of strike, and you'd like to be considered for WGA membership when this all blows over, listen carefully and research the following fully, DOING SO MAY VERY WELL BAR ANY FUTURE MEMBERSHIP TO THE WGA. That's right, even if you do sell a script or get work and you want that work to be considered for 'points' towards the WGA, they may black-list you in the future. That said, don't worry about companies that have no interest to WGA points system nor indie outfits that have no interest either. Those you can sell and sleep safely.
On the plus side, those who know all about this know it's a great time to get your head down and really nail down those specs into place so when this does all blow over, you have material that's in excellent shape to send out.
