DLT or LTO tapes for HVX archive?

is it neccessary to have an MXF-aware tape backup at all if i edit on FCP & what i archive are mov files right? pls enlighten me cuz got lots of archiving to do & I'm looking for a tape solution. Quantum is too expensive if I don't need the MXF-aware function right?

i cant believe that in this day and time were still going to linear tape for archive...?
im not arguing the reality - just seems kind of backward from an evolutionary standpoint
Well, depends. If what you're planning on doing is sticking it on a shelf and never seeing it again (unless absolutely needed) then digital linear tape does that job as well as anything else.

If you're planning on constantly accessing the footage, linear tape is a lousy choice for that. But then again, that wouldn't really be an archive, would it? That would be more of an online database, and you'd want a decent-sized network-attached storage server for that job.

I think the worst choice is probably optical blu-ray, since it's pig-slow and small in capacity. A 400GB tape seems a much more reasonable choice than a 23GB disc, when you're talking about storing footage you may not need to see again for a week, a month, a year, or a decade.

Actually, I take that back -- video tape is probably the worst way to archive, because you lose all the clip-based nature of the footage. The next worst would be a bogus data tape solution such as archiving data on DV tapes. Then you start getting up to practical data-based archive systems, such as DVD or blu-ray; they'll work, but quickly become unmanageable.

As for practical/usable systems I think you need a speedy restore and a large capacity, and that makes LTO3 look fairly attractive, and HVD looks ideal (over a terabyte per disc, with a 1gbps access rate). But that's not out yet.

Hard disk is the most convenient to access and restore, obviously, but not necessarily a practical option for a reliable/bulletproof deep archive.

So I think that a prudent deep archive would be LTO3 tape or, if you don't have need for that deep archive quite yet, hold out for holographic video disc. Until then hard drives are plenty adequate as interim storage, but shouldn't really be viewed as an archive.

You don't NEED an MXF-aware drive, and unless you're using Raylight, you wouldn't even really be able to take that much advantage of it. You may want it, but for the cost difference an FCP user might just be better off using a regular LTO3 drive.

thanks Barry, i'm meeting a Tandberg representative today to check out their LTO-3 solution. they are definitely more responsive than the HP fellas.

Tape is too expensive for my needs. I just buy sets of bare drives and have a duplicate of each. 500gig drives are now around $100 each. So I spend $200 to back up 500gigs of video.
