Use HVX to record incoming signal from RCA cable? (ie to record from a VHS tape)

Is there a way to set my HVX to take the input from a VCR into the camera and record the incoming signal? I would like to transfer a VHS tape to DV by recording into my HVX, then importing into the computer. I used to do this on an old sony handycam. Is it possible to setup the HVX to act as a recorder to do this? If so, how?

Thanks!

never mind, I figured this out. This is possible as long as the camera is set to "tape" mode. I was trying to get it to record to a P2 card so I wouldn't have to capture a whole miniDV tape, but I'm just glad it works!

(of course if there is a way to get this to record onto the P2 card that would be amazing... please let me know!)

Depending on your NLE, you can bypass tape and P2.

You should be able to do Firewire out at the same time while playing back and use your NLE to record.

Hmm.. I have the VCR plugged into the HVX via RCA cables and the HVX sees the signal. The HVX is plugged into my MAC via Firewire and in VCR mode, but I can't get it to see the live signal coming in through the VCR. I tried turning it to "non-controllable device" but then just bars show up. If I hit capture now, it is just a black screen and it says "this operation could not be completed as there is no video" - even though I see it playing on my HVX's LCD.

Please Help! What setting is wrong or do I need to change on either FCP or the camera to get this working?

oh, and instead of saying "VTR OK" like it does in Firewire NTSC mode, when in non controllable device mode it just says "No Communication"
