Music Video - Custom Kings: UP LATE

finally i'm allowed to upload this to the net.....

my second music video, very low budget, great local band's first single off their debut album.

HVX202, 720pn, p+s mini35 with nikon lenses
one day, one location, one room(!), a few different set-ups
one 2.5K HMI thru a window, and as you can probably tell plenty of negative fill
could only afford a 2 hour professional colour grade

basically, the band told me they wanted a really simple performance video, just nice footage of them playing. that suited me fine, as personally i'm not a huge fan of 'narrative' music videos, or videos with an obvious 'concept.' my approach was to try and translate the feeling of the song into a specific colour palette and production design, and also try to create some interesting images that sit well with the music. there's nothing to be interpreted! my goal was to create something you feel more than think, if that makes sense.

it probably also comes across that i'm going through a 'minimalist' phase at the moment.... there's deliberately a lot of flat imagery because i wanted to try and get away from the visual overload that's become such a mainstream trend and, perhaps take a gamble, on my theory that it can be enjoyable to just look at people, doing nothing much at all. i also wanted to avoid a lot of camera movement, but allow a sense of movement to come through what was happening within the frame (ie. the band playing, dancing etc.)

and the band are very happy with how they come across.

sorry i tend to waffle on.

i posted the vid on stage6 - wow, what an awesome hosting site!

if you don't have DivX drivers installed and for some crazy reason you enjoy torturing your eyes, you can also see it on youtube:

thanks to those who did.

yes, the band are signed to a pretty decent independent label here in australia, they're generating some nice buzz in the music scene here. the vid is for the first single off their debut album.

the blinky lights were old fluorescents that the art director and myself stumbled upon stored away in a warehouse.

actually the flickering was pure chance - the gaffer rigged them all up and gave me each end of the extension cords powering them. i only wanted them to come on for the chorus so manually controlling the circuit myself was a ghetto solution. of course i soon discovered that when i didn't push the plugs all the way in together, but instead jiggled them around, it caused the bulbs to flicker. it also produced a lot of concerning noises and, needless to say, for legal and financial reasons i was the only person for that job. so i willingly risked electrocution, watching the monitor whilst jiggling electrical cables to achieve that effect.

Hi Darcy,

That was excellent, beautiful set design and execution.

I think this serves to remind all of us that it's far far better to do something simple well, than something too ambitious badly.

Well Done
