I tried searching for this but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I have a. If pelican case for my gear but I really news to get a soft case that I can carry on a plane and can hold my hvx, brevis, lenses batteries and my Marshall.

What would be my best bet for something like this. I've been looking at the portabrace carry on cases but I don't know how much I can fit in there and how good of quality they are. I need to make a purchase soon so any help would be appreciated

some of the portabraces are way oversized for some smaller plane carry on requirements.

the cinebags backpack works nicely!

I traveled with my hvx trough thailand for a month with the tamrac model 752 backpack.

The pack was great all of the dividers in the lower compartment are attached with velcro and pull out so that your hvx fits perfect. There is a flap that covers the gear compartment to protect your camera from rain and it's insulated with foam to protect it bumps and bruises as well as from extreme heat and cold.
Best of all it doesn't look like a camera bag, it looks like a normal back pack, doesn't draw attention to the fact that you are toting around a $5000 camera.

I use my tamrac bag when ever I fly or am in a run and gun situation.

For carrying my HVX onboard I use a Portabrace DV3U.

Since I'm in the middle of no where I have to fly regional jets before I get to a hub that flies larger planes with larger overhead bins. the DV3U will fit in the smaller regional jet overhead bins.

Although it's small and I probably wouldn't recommend it, I fit my HVX, mattebox, 5 P2 cards, a couple 4X4 filters, the charger that came with the camera, four batteries, a zoom, iris, focus controller and a couple other odds and ends in it. It's certainly not the way you want to walk around with all that stuff but to get it all on board it worked.

I shipped a bigger bag ahead so I had room for all the other stuff in my other carryon as well as giving everything else some breathing room.

I travel all over the world with my Petrol soft case. But I have a case by 16X9 that works well it compacts good and has plenty of space inside for all your extra goodies. and its one of the few cases that will carry the camera with mattebox attached.

Just been carried two HVX in two seperate petrol rucksacks. No issues at all.

Both fit in the lockers fine, both above weight when loaded up.

If you're looking for a backpack, I've used the Kata BP-502: http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=252&cid=67&perentId=1&ProdLine=1

It's a little bulky and over the max allowable size, but I've still never been hassled. It protects the camera wonderfully, and has room for plenty of other stuff too. It's also very comfortable to haul around.

It's extremely well-built (check out the web site; they make bullet-proof vests too, no joke!) and cost about $300.

I love the lowepro backpack. It's small but perfect for the HVX and accessories and I can also store my laptop in the bag... and it's also only around 150 bucks. They make one version too that has rollign wheels to take through airports and such... Great bag and comes also with weather rain gear so it's an all round great solution.. and you don't look liek you are carrying anything expensive, look more like a backpacker than a filmmaker...

I use the Ty Video backpack from Ogio. It's cheap ($149.99) and holds my laptop, and two camcorders or HVX with all of the toys.

I've just come back from Germany and wanted to be able to travel light and relatively unobtrustively...so I simply went to the local camera shop and found a lightweight cheap Cobra bag....the camera would just fit in..and the beauty was it wasn't anywhere near as bulky as my regular Petrol bag...sometimes there is something to be said for being portable and not standing out from the crowd with a big massive camera bag!

Hi danbrains:

If you mean the Ty Video bag from Ogio, I carried it from LA to London in August, it's definitely carry-on-able.

the pelican 1510 is carry on size and it's the safest way to carry your hvx. I traveled extensivly with it and had no problems. Its legal carry on size.
It's only a problem if you use regional jets. It doesnt fit in, you usually leave it just before boarding at the gate and pick it up just after landing(it's not checkin). Had no problems with that either. It makes a nice seat when waiting for late planes.

I usually put my batteries, accesories and monitor in my regular check in luggage. It is of no interest for the people stealing from luggage, i doubt they understand what a 35mm adaptor is. You could always carry what does not fit in the pelican with you in a small shoulder bag. Me i have to carry my canon still camera and lenses with so i have to compromise.

The reason i use the pelican is that after a while even if your very careful you always end up bumping the camera bag. Trains, taxis, shuttle bus, bus, transfering planes.....

Just my 2 cents....

There's no doubt that the Pelican or Storm cases are the best way to protect your HVX.
The problem lies in that if you don't pack another camera bag in checked luggage or send one ahead, you wind up carrying a suitcase around in the field.

Not a problem if you're doing a studio shoot but if you're hiking around Hawaii, do you really want to carry a Pelican case around?

If I can ship ahead, I send a larger bag ahead of me. If not, I pack a bag in my suitcase and fill it with socks or whatever.

Then when I reach my destination I take the HVX out of the smaller carryon Portabrace bag and put the mattebox on and go hiking around with the bigger bag or the backpack.

i wouldnt think about stowing my hvx in a bag in an overhead compartment as there is always some jackass attorney (or such) with a big-ass rolling document case who just flings it up in there without regard for whats behind or beside it...

The Kata HB 207 is a great bag. I've flown with it several times, most recently to Europe. It fit well in the overhead and I didn't get a blink from the check in people about it. I highly recommend it for the HVX. It has a ton of padding so I didn't worry about other people banging their stuff into it in the overhead.

I also have the storm case im2500. It is flight legal, but I have never used it on a flight. The only time I would really ever use it at this point is whe I know I was am going to be stuck in foul weather and want to protect the camera. The Kata is good for that to a point but the storm case is bullet proof.

The Kata HB 207 isn't carry on legal for airlines like United and Northwest which list 22" x 14" x 9" as max carry on dimensions.

The HB 207 is 15.3 x 11.8 x 25.2

The DV3u that I use for carry on is 20 x 10 x 9"

On a regional jet, I can barely squeeze it in the overhead. It's not the depth of the length. There's plenty of room in the overhead. It's the height. I can barely squeeze it into the overhead. Once it's in there it has more room but on regional flights I don't think there's anyway you can get anything taller in there.

Now once I hit a major hub and we fly larger jets, the DV3u swims in the overhead bin.

I usually carry a backpack with my laptop as well so that goes in the overhead as well to buffer anything that someone wants to slam in next to it.
