What would be the best way to shoot if I know that we will be converting sd to hd?
I know I need to shoot in progressive mode. Should I use 24p or 24pa. I will be using Final Cut to edit and I'm thinking of using Instant HD plugin. I would like to be able to convert to 16x9 1080i or 720p. Should I use letter box now or just convert it to 16x9 later? Can anyone point me in the right direction. The fist shoot will be stationary interviews but I know the next time we shoot will be action scenes filmed from a stationary tripod also. No slow motion editing will be needed. I'm looking for best quality and don't mind the time involved in extra steps. I don't have any anamorphic adapters just a wide angle lens.
Thanks,
Justin

After reading all 3 of those post I'm even more confused! Seems like if I just wanna go 16x9 I should use sqeeze mode. But if I want to up rez and go 16x9 I should use Letterbox?

For best 16:9 footage you have 2 ways:
1. In camera progressive squeeze mode (use 16:9 timeline)
2. Out camera progressive letterbox + software

what about an anamorphic lens adapter?

They seem to run around $800, but it seems less of a hassle than the software method, and without losing any resolution.

I have neither owned or used one but I am also weighing my options for attaining 16:9 aspect ratio with my DVX100

The question is, why do you need to finish in HD? If it's to conform with some other footage then fine, but if you think you are going to gain something in the process you are mistaken.

No uprez is going to look great, and InstantHD doesn't have a great look to it from my experience. There may be better ways to do the uprez.

That aside, what you need to do now is just shoot really nice footage. This may sound strange, but I'd lower the Detail setting on your camera to turn off some of the sharpening. The uprez is only going to make those sharpening artifacts look ugly, and the uprez will likely include some sharpening of its own. Instead, turn the detail settings down, but make sure you have your focus spot on. That's probably the most important factor here, good focus.

Also, good lighting, proper white balance and exposure. Nice clean images. If it looks as good as it can at SD, then it'll be as good as you can get when you uprez to HD.

Also, I always recommend SQUEEZE when your target output is 16:9, though some may disagree.

I have tried using PhotoZoom Pro to uprez my SD footage to 1080. But unfortunately, I didn't have 25p footage to experiment with yet. I used 50i PAL footage to uprez to HD using PhotoZoomPro. Sadly, the result didn't look that phenomenal using interlaced footage. I bet using progressive would produce a much better HD picture.

Anyone with experience using PhotoZoom Pro with 25p footage?

Andrew
