Christopher: Glad you found a way to get it to work, I had to change around a bit on shoulder mount as well to get it right. What you see in the picture with the gaffer tape is a classic example of me being a nevrotic paranoid, I have to be sure it wont move! It also make people wonder what the hell I've done with my camera, which is kinda fun. I remember a proffesional steadicam operator once said(cant remember the name): "After you have bought a new steadicam rig, the first thing you do is to bring the rig down to the basement and throw it around so when you show up on set the director wont think you're a newbie with your shiny new rig." Unfortunately my dvx rig doesn't look like it's used by proffesionals, it just looks like it's been dropped to the ground by a moron and taped back together :)
When I get a follow focus, I will operate it with my left hand, like I operate the focus ring on my lens now. I stabilize it by bending the left handgrip backwards so it can rest on my left underarm while my hand is on the focus ring or follow focus.

Funny thing, while I wrote this, my music video popped up on a TV music program which I have running in the background. My debut on national TV, yey...

Cool, broadcasting your clip!

I know what you mean by "it won't move". Wayne, with Rev.3, seems to have followed that approach by applying a 'cheeseplate' strip that runs under the two rail mounts, and then you shim the camera plate at the end of the cheeseplate strip. Looks solid. Gaffer tape or bust man.

Bending the left hand grip back is good method for support and ability to FF or turn lens gears, good one. I intend to place the FF on the same side. Can't decide between the Cavision and the Redrock FF. I wish the Cavision FF was tested by FreshDV when they tested about 5 different FF recently. I want to know for sure what gear back lash exists with the Cavision, compared to the Redrock and others, same test method.

Back to your clip and rig...

Have you concidered the Follow focus that Wayne makes now? It's cheaper thatn the redrock and cavision and it's supposed to have no backlash. You will probably hear from guys soon who have ordered it. The pre-order batch of 30 units went very fast, unfortunately I couldnt hop on that batch since I'm broke now. But I'm pretty sure I will go with FF Wayne makes, its sounds very promising.

Btw, do you have the link to the FreshDV FF test?

wtf, i think you were blessed a magical dvx. Mine does not put out images so beautiful. do you have a special setting you use?

Jconnor: 40 USD is a very friendly price, I thought it would be a lot more :) I will definately send you a mail when I get some cash on my account, totally broke at the moment.

For sure. Just let me know.

I use the Sgpro rev.2 35mm adapter, it's been said before that it has magic abbilities. It definately made me re-love my dvx again, that's for sure :)

My settings are pretty common:

Master ped: "-6"
Gamma: "normal"
Color matrix: "Norm1"
Detail level: "-4"

and everything else at zero.

Here is the link.

I considered the SGPro FF, except I never saw anything beyond a CAD render, it's version 1 which always concerns me with purchases, and as I understand it, it uses the same gear box as the Redrock FF.

The Cavision has an adjustable arm the adjusts to different angles and you can swap out the gears for different sizes, which is of interest to me. I am not sure of it's internals and what they are made of, nor fo I know if there is the backlash issue to any degree. Living in Australia, I have to try and get it right the first time, as I buy from OS, and I want to buy an FF now.

Thanks for the link!

I hope you find the right FF for your needs.
Concerning Waynes gearbox, here's what he said:

"It actually uses the same gearbox as the redrock and the indifocus, which is actually manufactured here in the UK.
I am in contact with the company that manufactures them, they are custom modifying them for me to eliminate any backlash/play in the gearbox."

Very cool and informative test(I dont know anything about Follow focus systems at all) at FreshDV. That Redrockmicro looks pretty solid for 650 us dollars.

Thanks for the quote Smettli. I obviously did not remember the part about the gear box mod/back lash removal. I want to get something soon. Shame about the time frame before the next SGPro FF batch are released. Redrock looks good value. If the Cavision had less backlash, I would go for it. Maybe I should email Jason at Cavision and see what info he can give me. I will get to test my friends Redrock soon, he just ordered some gear. cheers

Sounds good man, you should check with cavision guys. Until I've heard more from the sgpro FF, I'm holding a finger on the redrock.

Thanks mate.
The shoulder mount was 98 US dollars, and the hangrips are 160 US dollars.

-Cheers!

hey mate, how did you do those film like "burns/expossure???" while going from one scene to the other?

do you know what i mean?

gv.
