Best movie of 2007 so far.....

Children of Men had a release date right after Christmas I believe, with earlier dates in Europe. The Lives of Others came out last year in Europe with and hit festivals around the world with a limited release date around February or March this year in North America or something like that.

totally have to agree with the Lives of Others for best film. it was just brilliant. nothing much else has come close in my opinion.

I don't get an adrenaline charge thinking about someone taking an electric drill to their nuts!!!! that's just me...... thanks for the graphically violent visual Aloysius k

Zodiac isn't about violence and it doesn't exploit it when there is a violent episode. The episodes are not fun to watch. Fincher went to great lengths to retell the history of the murders in painstaking detail. He consulted with a surviving victim, who was actually on set and used many of the exact locations that the murders took place so that he could keep the integrity of history as uncompromised as possible. He even find actors for very small roles who look and act exactly like their historical counterparts.

I don't have the time or space to list how devoted Fincher was in telling this story EXACTLY like it happened. He even rebuilt the entire SF Chronicle floor to be inch for inch the same as it was during the 1970's.

Zodiac does not use violence to get people to buy tickets. It is about obsession, character, and bureacracy amongst other things. Also, I cannot remember any slow motions of death sequences for visual titillation or trying to get the audience to get excited about a kill. Whenever there is violence in Zodiac it is motivated, very real, and not a cheap thrill.
Gotta love those movies that make serial killers even more famous......... you don't have an electric drill do you? NEVER MIND, I don't want to know

C.G. Eads,

Godd suggestion with Once. Definitely one of the best films I've seen in the theater this year! Even my friends liked it, and we have varying tastes.

I don't get an adrenaline charge or bloodlust from watching people kill eachother in cool ways.

how the???i want to know

How do you get a adrenaline charge in the movies???
It always violence one way or another my friend...

There are different ways of handling a violent or even grizzly scene, and obviously the context is going to inform how to tackle it.

With 300, you have an effort to make the action scenes seem hip, ala The Matrix. Getting the audience charged or excited about the exxagerrated choreography of killing people and trying to make it look cool so that the audience will feel a rush from the stylization of the violence.

Since I mentioned Zodiac, a good example is the scene where the 2 lovers are attacked(1 killed) out at the lake. I don't sense that the director is trying to manipulate the audience into "enjoying" the murders. He is attempting to recreate history through the detailed notes given by a real, surviving victim. It is uncomfortable and you want the scene to be over as soon as possible.

I think that it is appropriate that if you are going to show someone getting killed in a film that is based on a historical event, you have a responsibility to try and make the audience feel as traumatized as they would feel as if they were actually there.

With 300, there is pleasure taken from watching people killed. 300 is the kind of film that people will buy on DVD and rewind to watch some scene where someone was killed because it was stylized in such a way that some people would think looks really cool.

I don't get the sense that someone would do that with Zodiac unless they were creepy.

These are from the trivia section of the IMDB change for 300:

"According to an interview with IGN.com, director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartans' phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes."

"Changes from history were made by Miller and director Zack Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic."

"Some weapons used in the film are actually weapons from previous war epics like Alexander (2004) and Troy (2004). They were "recycled" to cut costs."

That's efficient film making and budgeting in my book. And as far as changing the techniques and formations is sometimes needed to make a shot stand out. Now, if he had given them Uzis, it would be a different story. Almost every historical film will have some discrepancies, but there is also a lot of truth to that movie, particularly the way his wife took care of business back home, even when she was trying to ply the vote by sexual favors. Remember, it is a movie, not a historical doc.

... and these are "bad" things? What the....??? I guess there is no merit in artistic interpretation nor frugality. Oh well.

they definetly should have given them uzies....
damn after going through this thread,
it seems the common films mentioned all deal with violence....just something intetersted that i noticed....

yea this year really wasnt all that great. well, nothing like departed.

imho, batman 2 will be up there next there i think as far as action movies, but ****, there really isnt much to look forward to.....right?

guys, leave AloysiusK alone. He didn't like 300, oh well.

And AloysiusK, you did come off as "holier than thou". what did you expect them to say?

It is interesting how the absolute majority of films discussed at this website are violent, big commercial movies. Every now and again you'll get a foreign film or a comedy or even non-genre defined film, but they area few and far between.

If you look up and down at the archives it is pretty consistent.

People also seem to be all over the videogame turned into film movie, or the cartoon turned into film, or the Predator versus Robocop or whatever.

Don't you get bored with this stuff. There is so much fascinating, original and thoughtful films out there. It seems like such a waste of time to spend it watching synthetic, meathead movies.

Michael Clayton, for me... great story, theme, excellent script. Third act blew me away. What I would give to shoot a script like that.
