Formula 1 in the Rain... I love this.

Dunno if anyone cares or not, but that was Philippe Massa (red car, Ferrari) and Robert Kubica (white car, BMW) from this years Japanese Grand Prix 2 weeks ago.

That was on the last lap for like 8th place if I recall correctly. That whole race was in rain where you couldn't see the cars 100ft in front of you, and when you are driving 170mph....that's crazy! Fun race to watch though.

I love F1.

I love this stuff. I like Nascar best but because of tire issues they can't race in the rain. All of those racers have nerves of steel. And notice how in all that chaos they don't smack the other guy on purpose.

I didn't know how to download it so I used CCleaner first to clear my temp files then reclicked the link again to reload it. Checking my "Temporary Internet Files" folder it is called 8542684_03ccd6d5c3[1].flv which I can play with VLC.

These cars aren't built like Nascars so they can't bump if they wanted to. They are mostly made of carbon fiber and one small bump can totally destroy one little piece of the aero elements that keeps them glued to the track.

These cars produce enough down force at 100mph to drive on the ceiling. They can slow from 200 mph to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. They slow down so fast for turns that their necks have to withstand 3-4 G's in the forward direction. Some tracks have turns that produce 4 - 5 lateral G's for over 20 seconds at a time. And with lap times that last about 1 1/2 mins, and races that are 1 1/2 hours long, that is a lot of endurance.

The one cool thing about that race is after they stepped out of the cars they were like shaking hands and patting each other on the back talking about how much fun it was. Don't see that in many other forms of motor racing.

Umm... why did you post this, Matt? Isn't this how people are *supposed* to drive in the rain? That's how I drive when the roads are wet. Is that a bad thing?

 tommy... exactly!

I should have said this before, but my favorite thing about that vid is how they fight for the line... for just a SECOND... and then whoever wins the position gets it as the other car must create a new line, by cutting across the grass and the rumble strips. If the other driver didn't do this he would crash by trying to turn while still on the grass. What's great is they both have to do this a couple of times... in the last burst from the Ferrari... he is gunning it while he's still on grass! But he gets away with it because he didn't turn...

I love that!
