Pulling knife out of body like on smallville

Really eager actor willing to take one for the team?

Thanks Capt. I needed that laugh this morning. But why not use a handle, video pulling that out and away from the body on a tripod. Then rotoscope a blade in there with the blood oozing out and all.

Just out of curiosity (and I knwo it'll be asked eventually anyway), where can you find a high quality spring loaded blade?

I haven't googled it yet so I'll probably find it when i do. Just asking anyway.

Chris

Depending on wardrobe and other factors, if its a long or medium shot, you can put padding under the clothing with a blood packet stick the knife in and roll film. Works better in close ups. But experiment - I've done it and it works and no cheezy looking CG.

One approach would be an Extreme Close Up using stuffed clothes. Another approach that comes to mind would be to create a composite mask.

But I'm still ROLMAO over Capt Quirk's suggestion - always think outside the box!

Try and use an attachment, (but blend it with makeup) which mimics the torso, take a side angle and stuff the attacchment with gore and roll. Real gore always looks better.

Oh! i was thinking something entirely different. He is talking about a special effects prosthetic maybe? Like a fake belly?

Keep in mind, this will only work with struggling beginners. The S.A.G. would never let that fly with an A lister. Maybe Sandra Bernhardt...

Use an appliance (made of latex) which attaches to the actors torso whcih mimics the actor's chest or extends the actor's chest.

Righto - reminds me of when I shot a safety film at the workplace, some years ago. I had the staff group stage illustrative unsafe work activities and everything was going well. In the afternoon, I asked one manager to stage a scene to make it look he was trying to stop an elevator by putting his foot in the door. So when the elevator door opened, not only did he tap the closing door with his shoe but he actually put his ENTIRE leg in the closing elevator door! Fortunately, the interlock worked and the door opened (whew). Had his truly unsafe demonstration resulted in the elevator proceeding up with his leg on one side and body outside on the other, I would have had just the kind of video effect to get the audience's attention - BIG TIME <wink>

As far as how to simulate flesh with the knife, your local butcher has just what you need - just be sure you have something underneath (kevlar, etc) to shield the knife as it penetrates the meat. And you can run a tube from the inside that squirts liquified ketchup from a squeeze ball to complete the effect.

You could always cut to a tight closeup of the hand and blade where you only see a small amount of the body around the blade entry. Then you could use any kind of dummy/doll/stuffed clothing you wanted as you wouldn't actually see the actor for the knife pull. You could put the article of clothing over a pillow, stab through the clothes into the pillow.

True .. that was just a "for instance" to try and describe what I meant. Certainly the more like a real body the better, but all you need is the action of the knife coming out of the body, so something that would give a similar resistance
